A gorgeous white sand beach and six pools provide plenty of opportunity for some R&R in the sun.
The all-inclusive package provides access to six swimming pools, the fitness center, tennis courts, and non-motorized water sports at no extra cost. What’s Special About This Resort
The Palm at Playa is one of the trendiest all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya and offers a different experience than most all-inclusive resorts in the area. Rather than occupying a spot on the town’s Caribbean coastline, this is more of a city-style resort set a few blocks back – but don’t worry, it’s just a short stroll to the sand, and the famous Fifth Avenue is steps from the door. Plus, The Palm’s main attraction is its rooftop, hosting an awesome pool, bar, and lounging area. The crowd here is young and in search of partying, which is important to know before going. You’ll find rates at this resort quite attractive.
The Palm at Playa doesn’t do a great job at advertising what’s included in its all-inclusive package, despite offering it when you go to book a room. But we’ve got you covered. All dining and drinking are included in your rate at the resort’s restaurant and bar. Of course, you’ll have full access to The Roof as well.
Things we like:
-
Stylish, young, and trendy atmosphere
-
Fair room rates
-
Awesome rooftop pool-club-lounge area
-
Quick and easy access to Fifth Avenue

Brief History of Playa del Carmen
What was once an undeveloped area of dense jungle is now a thriving tourist destination dotted with luxurious resorts. Curious about Playa del Carmen’s humble beginnings? Here are a few quick facts.
Before it was Playa del Carmen, it was Xaman Ha, coined by the original Mayan inhabitants and meaning “waters of the north”. The beaches of Xaman Ha were used as a port to get to the island of Cozumel, either for business or on a spiritual pilgrimage.
The Mayan civilization flourished for several hundred years and built majestic cities in Tulum, Chitzen Itza, and Coba. Much of this ended when Spanish conquistadors arrived in the area. Eventually, Playa del Carmen became an official territory of Quintana Roo and families began to settle in what was to become a small fishing village.
Home to the Mesoamerican Reef (the second largest reef in the world), Cozumel became the set of a Jacques Cousteau scuba diving documentary in the early 1960s. All of a sudden, Cozumel was being recognized as one of the top dive spots in the world. All of this attention to Cozumel consequently brought tourism into Playa del Carmen as well, as it was just a short ferry ride away.
Feel Like Getting Out Of The Resort?
Just outside the walls of your resort, adventure is calling! Discover the best of Playa del Carmen, whether in the ocean, mystical cenotes, ancient ruins, or the city itself.
Diving
Cozumel, just off the coast from Playa del Carmen, has fantastic diving spots. The reefs off of Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef system in the world.
The diversity of dives suits all experience levels and include cave diving in cenotes, deep diving, and night diving. Discover the incredible underwater world of the Caribbean waters and see plenty of marine life: fish, turtles, moray eels, colorful sponges, rays, nurse sharks… you name it!
And if you just want to snorkel, check out Akumal!
Cenotes
Mexico is one of the world’s best destinations for cenotes. What’s a cenote, you ask? It’s a freshwater swimming pool that’s created by the collapse of limestone, resulting in a natural underground sinkhole.
The Yucatan Peninsula is riddled with these natural sinkholes (no seriously, there are hundreds of them!), and you bet there are plenty of options near Playa del Carmen.
Many cenotes contain underwater caverns that are popular among scuba divers. Scuba diving in a cavern is definitely adventurous, but you don’t have to be a diver to enjoy the natural beauty of a cenote.
You can swim, snorkel, or just walk through these amazing natural phenomenons. Some excursions even include rappelling, cliff diving, and zip-lining.
Ancient Ruins
Pack your walking shoes and sunglasses for a day trip to experience ancient Mayan ruins up close. Playa del Carmen is only a 20 to 30 minute drive away from some of the most well-preserved ruins in Mexico.
Get a glimpse of the ancient Mayan civilization through the majestic ruins and detailed engravings at Coba. This is also where you can walk up the iconic steps of the Ixmoja Pyramid, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the lush jungle at the top.
For a change of scenery, visit the Tulum Ruins next. The only ruin site located on a beach, here you can expect to see old stone structures surrounded by palm trees, cactus flowers, rocky cliffs, and local wildlife. There’s also a “secret” beach below the ruins where you can bask in the Caribbean sun and unique views.
La Quinta
This cobblestoned street in the heart of downtown Playa del Carmen is an excellent shopping destination and a must-visit for tourists! Take a walk along La Quinta (Fifth Avenue) and you’ll find hundreds of shops, restaurants, and local vendors.
Whether you’re in the market for designer handbags, collectible trinkets, or local artwork, there’s a good chance you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Shopping or not, it’s just a fun place to be and experience the buzzing energy and vibrant local culture of the Riviera Maya.
