What to Do
The highlight of Tyler Place Family Resort is getting the children involved in hands-on activities like bike rides, field trips, swimming at the lake, scavenger hunts, and hikes in the wilderness through the kids and teens program. While the kids are occupied in the morning, the parents can go on an off-property canoe trip and explore Vermont’s local waterways, take a short hike/bike trip near the Canadian border, try rock climbing, pickleball, sail on Lake Champlain, go on an antiques-hunting excursion, winery tour, or lay in a hammock all morning. The resort also offers a variety of fitness and relaxation options, such as tennis, aqua aerobics, yoga, pilates, and spa treatments.
In the afternoon, the kids come back for quality family time. During that four-hour break, families can do whatever they like, such as have yourself a family picnic then splurge on maple snow cones and cotton candy, play some lawn games like relay races and tug a war, go fishing, take a nature hike, go on a guided trip to Proper Pond, enjoy a banana boat ride, participate in some arts and crafts workshops. Or you can take the family and relax by the pool or the beach.
The kids’ program is set up with ten age-staggered groups from infants to teens, each with a clubhouse and super-low counselor-to-child ratios that keep your kids occupied in the mornings and evenings. They encourage firsts and help your child learn to swim or ride a bike under supervision if they want to learn. The daily activities consist of age-appropriate sports, activities, and recreational facilities, including bike trips, fishing, kayaking, jumping on the trampoline in the lake, mini-golf, row boating, tubing, paddle boarding, banana boating, rock climbing wall, campfires, hayrides, arts & crafts, puppets, nature hikes, pirate night, Capture the Flag, and farm tours to name a few.
The resort is open from Memorial Day weekend until just after Labor Day. Early- and late-season special rates can bring savings; your vacation can be significantly less expensive if you come during the fringe weeks of summer instead of the high summer season.
What to Eat & Drink
All the meals are held in the main dining room in the Inn. Gather up the gang for a family breakfast or lunch with plentiful choices from the buffet of locally Vermont-grown produce and salads, and homemade baked goods. You can also get a lunch picnic basket at no extra charge if you want to enjoy some quiet time on the grounds.
For the evening meals, kids eat earlier to allow parents to have intimate adults-only dinners. The kids get to enjoy healthy, varied food options (of course, pizza and chicken fingers are on the list) in their own separate dining area. Dinner choices are fabulous with delicious items such as Maple Smoked Seafood Platter, Slow Roasted Prime Rib, Shrimp Scampi, Yellow Fin Tuna Steaks w/ Mango Salsa, Sweet Chili Glazed Vermont Soy Tofu, and Hand Made Gnocchi w/ Truffled Leek Cream. Parents can also enjoy Vermont spirits and fine wines from all over the world while listening to Jazz or dancing the night away at the resort’s bar and lounge on their evening out while the kids have a babysitter.
Room Guide
Families have a choice of staying in the 72 unique cottages or family suites spread throughout the resort along the lakeshore, in the woods, in meadows, or in the Inn. The cottages and carriage houses vary in size and configuration, so you get what best suits your family. Each private accommodation has a primary bedroom, a children’s bedroom or sleeping alcove, and one or more private baths.
The location of your accommodation is the main factor that affects your rate. Cottages closer to the Inn and those that have lake views can have a higher rate, but wherever you choose to stay, the community gives off a friendly neighborhood vibe.
Cottages: Most cottages’ main bedrooms have king beds and are separated from other bedrooms that sleep 3 to 6 guests. Most have a kitchenette, a living room with a fireplace, and a porch. Some have a small lawn with playground equipment nearby for the kids to play on. Most cottages have a 5-8 minute walk to the Inn. The farmhouse and the Tyler Cottages can accommodate up to 10 guests. Further out is the Ferncroft, Elmwood & Carriage Houses, which have a 10-minute walk and accommodate 2 to 9 guests. The Hill Cottages are the closest to the inn if you want to be near the main dining room.
Family Suites: The Inn’s 12 accommodations are in a separate wing from the public rooms providing some privacy, although it is a short walk to the dining room. The two-room suites/studios have a main bedroom or loft with a king bed and do not have kitchenettes; however, they have small refrigerators and microwaves.
Special Experiences
There is so much to do at Tyler Place Family Resort, and they sprinkle in special experiences within guided excursions for the adults. For example, if you go on a guided bike tour, you might have the chance to take a thrilling jump into a swimming hole, or on a guided kayak tour, you’ll stop at a local winery to try delicious samples or go on an afternoon brew tour. There are even more local food and drink tours during the September Taste of Vermont celebration.
