Disneyland CA in Anaheim – From Humble Beginnings to a Theme Park Sensation

We all know Rome wasn’t built in a day. Well, neither was the “happiest place on earth”! It’s taken over 60 years of heart, determination, and a single dream: to bring families together in a place of wonder and fun.

It all started in the 1940s when Walt Disney had a vision to create a place where families could escape the ordinary and immerse themselves in a world of magic and imagination. After almost a decade of conceptualization and planning, Disney finally started construction on a 160-acre lot in Anaheim, California.

The theme park was up and running in just a year’s time. Disneyland opened its doors for the very first time on July 17, 1955, with 18 rides and attractions. The opening day was actually quite a disaster, thanks to triple-digit weather, lack of drinking water, and wet cement (yikes!).

But that wasn’t enough to stop the magic. The problems were quickly fixed, and people from all over the country started flocking to this enchanting wonderland. Within a year of its opening, Disneyland had welcomed 5 million visitors. Today, that number is closer to 800 million!

While it has grown and evolved over the years into eight different lands and over 40 attractions, it all started with five special-themed lands (that you can still visit today!).

  • Main Street USA – The main entrance and exit point of the theme park, Main Street USA is a nostalgic re-creation of a small town main street at the turn of the 20th century. It’s lined with quaint shops, vintage vehicles, a cinema, and a town hall.
  • Adventureland – This exotic land feels like a remote jungle complete with tropical plants, tiki gods, and singing birds. You can take a riverboat ride through jungle waters or go on a thrilling Indiana Jones Adventure in the ancient temple.
  • Fantasyland – A land of enchantment and fairy-tale magic, this area of Disneyland is inspired by classic Disney films like Peter Pan, Snow White, and Alice in Wonderland. It features gentle rides, the Sleeping Beauty Castle, and Fantasy Village.
  • Tomorrowland – Disney was fascinated by the “marvels of the future,” so he created Tomorrowland to represent the exhilarating future of the Space Age and other futurist visions. It’s home to Space Mountain, the Star Tours adventures, and the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.
  • Frontierland – This area of Disneyland takes you back to the wild, wild west, where the pioneering spirit of the country’s past is celebrated with attractions such as Big Thunder Moutain Railroad and the Mark Twain Riverboat. Expect to see lots of cowboys, pioneers, and saloons as you walk through Frontierland.

New Orleans Square – Created as an ode to one of Disney’s favorite cities, the New Orleans Square is where you’ll find two of Disneyland’s most popular attractions: the Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. Eat gumbo, listen to Dixieland music, and stroll through the French Quarter in this little slice of New Orleans.

What are the best hotels to stay at in Disneyland?

Once your Disneyland tickets are secured, you have one more important decision left to make: where to stay. There are countless hotel options in and around Disneyland, but the best hotel to stay at will be based on factors such as location, amenities, and your budget.

  • Location is important to consider if you plan on making multiple trips to the park. A hotel that’s within a short walking distance from Disneyland can make it super easy to go back and forth between your room and the park, which can be especially helpful for parents traveling with young children and adhering to their nap schedules.
  • Amenities are another big factor you’ll want to look at. Maybe having a fridge and microwave for snacking and keeping leftovers is important to you. Or maybe you really look forward to soaking in the hot tub after a long day at Disney.
  • Of course, your budget will also play a big role in deciding where to stay. Not only can you consider nightly rates, but you should also check out free perks such as WiFi, parking, and complimentary breakfast.

So, below are a few of the best hotels near Disneyland that take all those factors into consideration:

What hotels are walking distance to Disneyland?

Whether you’re traveling with kids or just want to avoid long walks in the sun, staying at a hotel that’s within walking distance to Disneyland can make your trip that much more enjoyable.

Fortunately, there are plenty of great hotels that are about a 10 minute walk from Disneyland. Check out our favorite ones below!

Is it cheaper to stay outside of Disneyland?

It’s no secret that staying at a Disneyland hotel adds a special element to the trip, with direct access to the park and other Disney perks. However, staying at a Disneyland hotel also comes at a steep cost – one that many families are not willing to pay or would rather save for a special occasion.

Staying outside of Disneyland is a really cost-effective option that still allows you to enjoy a fun-filled, magical trip without the huge price tag.

Take into consideration other amenities such as free breakfast, parking, and WiFi, and you’ll save even more money.

On a tight budget? Check out these hotels that’ll give you the most bang for your buck:

Hampton Inn And Suites Anaheim Outdoor

Should you stay overnight when you visit Disneyland?

Considering the price of admission and all there is to see and do at Disneyland, you should absolutely stay overnight when you visit!

The ideal length to stay at Disneyland to have enough time to visit all the attractions is somewhere between 3-5 days.

Expect a lot of walking and warm weather, so be prepared with a water bottle, lots of sunscreen, and a hat.

Happy exploring!
