Angama Mara
What’s Special About This Resort
For nature lovers, there is no other experience in the world as unique as an African safari. Deep in the Maasai Mara, the best place to see exotic wildlife in Kenya, the Angama Mara is a high-end, all-inclusive paradise that puts you right in the middle of that very nature. The resort’s name comes from the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’, and that’s a good way to describe it, as its two camps of 15 tented suites each are perched high on a hill above the Great Rift Valley floor. Beautiful luxury and panoramic views await after days filled with game drives and nature walks.
Your stay at Angama Mara is all-inclusive of accommodation, meals, and drinks, with the exception of French champagnes. Your transfers from the local airfield are also included, as are group-guided safari drives and walks. You will need to pay daily entry fees into the Maasai Mara reserve. Childcare in the evenings is provided free of charge.
Things we like:
-
Ideal location in the middle of the Mara Triangle for top viewing of the Great Migration, lions, elephants, rhinoceros, and more
-
Safari excursions are included in the rate package
-
Tented suites are luxurious and large
-
Property is small and intimate with just two identical “camps” 15 suites each
-
Expansive views of the Maasai Mara from suite terraces and guest common areas
Things we don't like:
-
No air conditioning (although not as bad as it sounds due to the high altitude and cool desert nights)
-
Remote location means you must arrive by small plane from Nairobi
-
Swimming pool could be a lot better given the surroundings and atmosphere

Angama Mara
What to Do
This is an African safari adventure – don’t come to Angama Mara if you’re just looking to lounge around the resort. Every day is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Great Migration animals like wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, as well as African giants like lions and elephants.
Daily game drives are included in your stay package to go in search of Africa’s “big five” – lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhino. The resort has a private road into the heart of the reserve, and it’s only a 20-minute journey. Vehicles don’t take more than six people.
Take a day to explore on foot, too, as local naturalists are ready to share the best viewpoints of the valley and hike down to its floor with you. With no established trails, every nature walk is different, and guides listen to what you want to see and how far you want to go.
At the end of the day, gather at the Sundowner Boma, a common space for a bonfire at sunset and the sharing of local treats and drinks. You’ll also get to see a Maasai warrior performance from local people and appreciate their culture.
What to Eat & Drink
An interesting aspect of Angama Mara is its dining concept. Unlike many all-inclusive resorts, you won’t find multiple restaurants here, or a buffet anywhere in sight.
Instead, there’s just a central kitchen concept ready to serve you daily à-la-carte specials essentially anywhere you please. There is a common dining area with tables overlooking the reserve, but the staff is equally happy to set up your meal on your private terrace or in a more secluded spot.
You won’t find any menus while planning your trip either. The chefs here look for fresh, quality ingredients every day and curate culinary delights based on what they have. You can expect Kenyan traditional foods and flavors married with international favorites most of the time, and dissatisfaction with the food is very rare.
Room Guide
Room choices at Angama Mara are simple as well – there’s just one category at the main resort. However, there’s also an Angama Safari Camp deeper in the reserve to host campout-type excursions.
Tented Suites: There are two identical “camps” at the resort with 15 of these suites each. All of them are designed to capture the very best of the unbelievable views of the valley below, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the front. The roof and all sides are traditional canvas, but you can expect the space to be sealed and comfortable. Furnishings, the bathroom, and decor are luxurious and authentically local. Again, we can’t emphasize the view enough – from the bed, the bathtub, the terrace, the couch… or anywhere else.
Angama Safari Camp: This space is separate from the main resort and located in the heart of the reserve. It has four ensuite tents and is booked on a sole-use basis, great for large families or groups. It’s a camping experience with 21st-century luxuries, and your group wakes up with the rest of the residents of the Maasai Mara just out front.
Special Experiences
It’s hard to make an African safari like this even more special than it already is, but it’s certainly possible at Angama Mara. For one, game drives and walking safaris can be made private to your group if you’d rather have a totally exclusive day in nature.
What’s better than walking or driving through the Maasai Mara? Floating above it; but not in a noisy helicopter or cramped airplane. Book a hot air balloon ride over the reserve and float gently over the river and wildlife before landing in the middle of nowhere and toasting over breakfast.
If you’re headed to the Maasai Mara in celebration, let the resort know. Whether you want to renew your vows, celebrate your anniversary, or literally get married on-site, the welcoming Maasai people are ready to incorporate their culture and make it the most memorable thing you’ve done.
