What’s Special About This Resort
The Westin Reserva Conchal is one of the most popular all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, thanks to its luxurious, relaxing atmosphere in the middle of adventures and fun. The property occupies a very large area in a prime spot just 30 minutes from the surf town of Tamarindo.
From the calm, golden-sand shores of Playa Conchal, visitors can snorkel, surf, search for shells, or just enjoy the view. Hiking trails with panoramic vistas and waterfalls can be found in the rainforests on land.
Whatever balance you choose, there’s a large lagoon-style pool, more than 10 restaurants, golf, and wellness back at the resort – some guests choose not to leave any of this at all.
All stays at the Westin Reserva Conchal are all-inclusive, and guests have three meals, drinks, alcohol, and snacks included in their room rate. The kid’s club, non-motorized water sports, tennis, and nightly entertainment are some other benefits.
Things we like:
-
Adults-only resort-within-resort called Club Westin with a relaxing private pool
-
Family-friendly main resort with a great kid’s club
-
Huge variety of dining and drinking, all of which are included
-

-

Things we don't like:

Reservations are required for all dinners and even to use the gym
-
With more than 400 rooms, it is a large resort and may feel crowded when busy

What’s Special About This Resort
Occidental Tamarindo, formerly known as Barceló Langosta Beach Hotel but still part of the hotel group, is the premier Costa Rica all-inclusive in Tamarindo. You won’t find a resort in this famous surf town that offers such a package with comparable amenities.
Experienced surfers will be just as happy as beginners with the breaks of Tamarindo Beach, thanks to the consistent roll that sticks around all year. The golden sand shoreline provides the perfect spot to watch everyone catch their waves.
A large swimming pool, a spa, and several restaurants are available at the resort, and it’s easy to plan a day excursion on the water or in the jungle.
Guests of Occidental Tamarindo can enjoy three buffet meals a day at Lobster Restaurant, plus local beverages and snacks at the pool bar. For every three nights, one dinner at one of the à-la-carte restaurants is included as well. Resort entertainment, watersports, and land sports are included as well.
Things we like:
-
Less than a mile from famous Tamarindo Beach surfing and fun
-
Plenty of surf rentals, lessons, and excursions all around the resort and near town
-
Large swimming pool with kid’s section
-
Duplex suites available for guests who want more space
-
Nightly entertainment is great for families
Things we don't like:

-
Resort is starting to show its old age
-
Tamarindo Beach isn’t ideal for swimming, nor is the even closer Langosta Beach
What’s Special About This Resort
There are a ton of romantic all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, but the Andaz at Peninsula Papagayo is our choice for a couple’s escape. Besides the sparkling infinity swimming pools overlooking the sea from high above, this resort’s suites and villas offer private plunge pools for those on a very special vacation.
There are two sandy beaches just a short walk down the hill, complete with plenty of water toys. But the third one, Playa Nacascolo, will make you feel even more distant from the world, with its mangrove-lined perimeter and brand-new beach club.
Excellent dining, entertainment, and spa services round the whole experience off nicely, while adventures into the jungles and backcountry captivate more of the Pura Vida of Costa Rica.
You can select an all-inclusive rate at the Andaz Costa Rica by booking the Food & Drinks Package. This adds breakfast, lunch, dinner, and minibar snacks, plus non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic ones from a select list.
Things we like:
-
Awesome pool experience with infinity edge to the sea, high on a hill; plus, private plunge pools in upgraded rooms
-
Three beach experiences with water toys, a snorkeling-hiking circuit, and a remote beach club
-
Treehouse-inspired accommodations are very luxurious and unique
-
Some adults-only facilities but plenty of family-friendly amenities as well
-
Great wellness programs, spa, and fitness facilities
Things we don't like:
-
All-inclusive rate does have black-out dates and isn’t always available
-
Just three restaurants plus the beach club
What’s Special About This Resort
Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica is an all-inclusive resort that could hold many titles, but if you love stepping into a sparkling swimming pool straight from your balcony, this is your Guanacaste escape.
It’s situated on the quiet Playa el Jobo, which is found in the far north of the country’s Pacific side, approaching the border with Nicaragua. Therefore, this place should be on your list if you’re looking for a secluded couple’s escape, a family adventure, or a luxurious and special vacation in general.
A sandy shore is on one side of the expansive resort, while wild jungle surrounds it on the others. Fill your vacation with time at the adults-only pool, fun at the kid’s club, scuba diving, fishing, and much more.
The all-inclusive experience at Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica is a good one, without restrictions on the unlimited dining and drinking. Nonstop room service and lots of resort entertainment are additional perks.
Things we like:
-
High-quality swim-out rooms and suites, with large, furnished terraces and full stairs to enter the pool
-
Huge network of swimming pools, including an adults-only option
-
Family-friendly amenities like an all-day kid’s club, an evening teen’s club, and a waterslide
-
Beautiful location on a remote, sandy beach surrounded by rainforest
-
No dining reservations required
Things we don't like:
-
Very remote location is beautiful, but takes longer to reach
-
The beach here can be a bit choppy and windy at times
What’s Special About This Resort
There are not a ton of adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, and while Secrets Papagayo may not have many competitors, it is number one in the category by far. This secluded resort sits on the south side of Culebra Bay, in between the Papagayo Peninsula and the beach towns of Coco and Playa Hermosa.
The sprawling grounds cover tall hills leading to a sandy cove, creating spectacular views and easy beach access. Luxurious guest rooms offer furnished balconies, and some even have their own plunge pools. Some of the dozen restaurants and bars include a swim-up bar, a Pan-Asian eatery with hibachi stations, and a formal Italian dining room. The spa, swimming pools, and activity options will ensure there’s always some way for grown-ups to relax or have fun.
All guests of Secrets Papagayo enjoy unlimited dining and drinking with the all-inclusive concept. Resort entertainment, wifi, and room service are other benefits.
Things we like:
-
Location: secluded but still easy to reach local towns; perched on coastal hills but still with a large beach
-
Many diverse dining and drinking options
-
Luxurious guest rooms with balconies and some with private plunge pools
-
Lots of great evening entertainment
-
Large spa with indoor and outdoor treatment venues
Things we don't like:
-
Large resort size combined with hills can make it long and tiring to walk around - but they do run shuttles
-
Different restaurant opening days can be difficult to organize
What’s Special About This Resort
Hotel Riu Guanacaste is located on a secluded valley beach just south of the town of Coco, and we consider it a great choice for families for several reasons.
For one, this all-inclusive Costa Rica resort offers a great combination of seclusion, convenience, relaxation, and fun. For two, there are plenty of unique, kid-friendly amenities like a resort waterpark, a playground, and multi-bedroom family suites. And for three, grown-ups aren’t left out, as quality gastronomy, a great spa, and even a nighttime disco provide plenty to do around the clock.
Multiple swimming pools and a long dark-sand beach round this place off as an escape to the sun for guests of any age. Its adults-only sister property, Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica, is just next door and shares some amenities – while all-inclusive benefits won’t apply there, the additional dining options will be welcomed by foodies.
Hotel Riu Guanacaste is all-inclusive, 24 hours per day. Guests have access to buffet and à-la-carte dining, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinking, with the exception of those at the disco. Various games, sports, and entertainment offerings are additional benefits.
Things we like:
-
“Splash Water World” waterpark with slides and splash pads
-
Wide-ranging entertainment program put on by an in-house team, for both adults and kids
-
Adult-friendly amenities like a spa and a disco as well
-
Sandy beach appropriate for swimming and watersports
-
Good location far enough from town but close enough to quickly visit
Things we don't like:
-
Extremely large resort with over 700 rooms (more than 1200 when sister resort is included), meaning it can be very crowded
-
Quality of rooms, public spaces, and amenities is beginning to lack upkeep

What’s Special About This Resort
There’s no better choice for this category than Planet Hollywood Costa Rica, an all-iclusive resort that literally describes itself as entertainment-themed. It’s well-executed, too, finding a surprisingly satisfying balance of serene Costa Rican nature and a-list experiences.
It’s perched on a hill above Culebra Bay, right at the base of the Papagayo Peninsula. That gives it exceptional views, easy access to diving and watersports, and convenient placement among lush greenery. Watersports, kids splash zones, daytime and nighttime entertainment, and much more make sure everyone is entertained all the time, while a lovely spa is perfect for the opposite kind of day.
Off-property adventures and idyllic beaches are other options to enjoy in between star-studded dining and accommodations fit for celebrities.
The all-inclusive experience of Planet Hollywood Costa Rica includes all à-la-carte and buffet dining as well as all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinking. Non-motorized water sports, fun events, and lots of other Hollywood-inspired amenities are other benefits.
Things we like:
-
Great location on the Papagayo Peninsula and just 30 minutes from the airport
-
Hollywood entertainment theme incorporated in every touch of the resort
-
Daytime and nighttime resort-led shows, themes, games, and performances, plus a sports bar-night club
-
Peaceful, scenic swimming pools and kid’s splash zone
-
Star Class upgrade makes it possible to access even more exclusive areas and benefits
Things we don't like:
-
The service here can be quite slow and inattentive when the resort is busy, even if you upgrade to Star Class
-
Different restaurants open on different days, making dining more complicated

What’s Special About This Resort
The stylish boutique hotel vibe combined with serene surroundings have earned El Mangroove a four-star Forbes Travel Guide rating. The relaxing aspects of your stay begin immediately, as this beachfront Guanacaste all-inclusive resort is just 20 minutes from the airport, and you won’t find a comparable resort any closer than that.
The long, black-tiled adult pool is surrounded by shady lounge chairs and cabanas, as are the additional child-friendly pools. Guest room and public area designs are inspired by mangrove forests that blanket much of the Costa Rican shore, creating a feeling of natural luxury.
A fleet of resort-owned watercraft, including two boats and several jet skis, allows adventures like snorkeling, wildlife searching, fishing, and all kinds of watersports to take place in-house and without the company of others. We’ve seen some pretty relaxing resorts in Guanacaste, but this one is special.
El Mangroove is only all-inclusive if you book this type of room rate or upgrade to it, so be sure to reserve your stay accordingly. If selected, guests enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus snacks and in-room dining. All non-alcoholic beverages and a large selection of alcohol is included as well..
Things we like:
-
Small, stylish, hip boutique hotel atmosphere
-
Luxurious adult pool and a kid-friendly pool that's still pretty peaceful
-
Great location on a quiet beach just 20 minutes from the airport
-
In-house fleet of boats and jet skis that can be chartered for a huge range of tours and adventures
-
Food and beverage has a very good reputation and has been described as superior to other Costa Rica resorts
Things we don't like:
-
Small selection of bars and restaurants on site
-
The pools could use more seating, especially when the resort is busy
What’s Special About This Resort
We’ve focused a lot on the beach all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, as these are the most abundant, and it’s easy to visit the mountains on a day trip. But doing it the other way around is totally feasible, and Los Altos de Eros Boutique Hotel & Spa should be a top consideration for that.
Located more than 5 miles from the nearest coastline, this small hotel is high above the lush greenery of Guanacaste, and the panoramic views magnificently stretch to the ocean in the distance.
An adults-only, spa-like atmosphere combines with this spot in the heavens for an exceptionally peaceful stay far from the rest of the world. A semi-challenging hiking loop is located at your doorstep, and activities like ATV safaris, ziplines, waterfalls, and all kinds of other rainforest adventures are in your backyard.
Guests of Los Altos de Eros Boutique Hotel & Spa always receive breakfast with their room rate but can opt for an all-inclusive package. This adds on daily lunch from the menu and a three-course dinner, plus unlimited drinks.
Things we like:
-
Small and intimate, with just six guest rooms
-
Adults-only, peaceful, spa-like atmosphere, high above the rainforest canopy with amazing views
-
Remote and secluded but not inconvenient to reach, at just 30 minutes from Tamarindo
-
Directly among fantastic hiking and jungle excursions
-
Spa, yoga, sauna, and other wellness aspects
Things we don't like:
-
Communal-style meals are nice for meeting people but not ideal for everyone, every time
-
The ride down to town is bumpy and may be uncomfortable for some guests
What’s Special About This Resort
If you want to enjoy the surf, nature, and other Pura Vida aspects of Costa Rica but can’t justify paying some of the rates of other Costa Rica all-inclusive resorts, the Best Western Jacó Beach is a solution that won’t leave you compromising on too much.
This resort offers reasonably-priced, all-inclusive stays on another one of the country’s most famous stretches of shore – Playa Jacó. Steps away from the dark sand, blue water, and rolling waves are the resort’s totally unlimited dining and drinking, sparkling infinity pool, and children’s splash pad.
A few more steps down Pastor Diaz Avenue is the quaint but lively town center lined with surf shops and local restaurants. Access to the adventure parks and pristine jungle of the Puntarenas Province is just as easy.
All guests of the Best Western Jacó Beach enjoy a truly all-inclusive stay. Unlimited dining is available until 9:30pm and unlimited drinking until 1:00am, all with no restrictions.
Things we like:
-
Recent and ongoing renovations, including a brand-new beachfront infinity pool
-
Kids splash pad, volleyball, and other games, both indoor and outdoor
-
Direct access to famous Jacó Beach and just a short walk from downtown
-
Besides hours of operation, no restrictions on dining and drinking within the all-inclusive package
-
Plenty of water and land activities easy to access from this resort
Things we don't like:
-
No elevators in the resort, and your room may be up to three floors up
-
Guest rooms are notably more plain and simple than more premium all-inclusive resorts, but still comfortable enough
Why Vacation at a Costa Rica All-Inclusive Resort?
Costa Rica is a land of wonders. With quiet coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and with vast swathes of protected jungle in between, this Central American country is teeming with life and biodiversity and lined with beautiful beaches.
Naturally, tourists from the colder northern and southern hemispheres have long been escaping to this haven of sunshine and nature.
Why Trust Our Reviews of the Best All-Inclusive Resorts in Costa Rica
Woodrow has been traveling the world since a young age, having checked off all 50 US states before even becoming an adult. He worked in hotel management for years, exploring the South Pacific and Asia before moving to France and seeing sites all over Europe.
Woodrow’s perfect vacation includes many things: beaches, mountains, nature, luxury, adventure, and relaxation, to name a few. Surfing, diving, hiking, fishing, and lots of other things are activities he loves in between lying by the pool and trying new foods. Costa Rica is a combination of all this plus more, and if you’re anything like our author, you are going to fall in love with La Pura Vida.
Does Costa Rica have all-inclusive resorts?
Yes, Costa Rica certainly has all-inclusive resorts! While they may not be as abundant as they are in places like the Riviera Maya or the Dominican Republic, we know of at least a dozen Costa Rica resorts that are totally all-inclusive or at least offer the option. The vast majority of these are in Guanacaste, the northwestern province that borders the Pacific Ocean, and most are beach resorts.
What to Expect at an All-Inclusive Resort in Costa Rica
Expect to find mainly beach resorts in Costa Rica, especially when it comes to all-inclusives. Nine out of the ten on our list are beachside escapes, but there are mountain lodges and eco-resorts in the lush jungle covering most of the country.
You should expect them all to be quite romantic and peaceful, without much of a party atmosphere for the most part. Activities like surfing, fishing, snorkeling, and other watersports are available at many of them, while excursions to the jungle are easily arranged as well.
Finally, there are fewer adults-only resorts in Costa Rica, and most are family-friendly. However, adults-only options do exist, and many of the family-friendly ones have adults-only pools or entire sections.

What Costa Rica Resorts have Swim-Up Rooms?
The only resort on our list that offers swim-out rooms is Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica. While there are others, most aren’t all-inclusive, and even if they were, we’d give the prize to Dreams Las Mareas anyway. Note that you’ll have to book a Club Level room to access the swim-out category.
Can you book Costa Rica all-inclusive resorts with flights?
It is possible to combine your flights with your accommodations in an all-inclusive package, but not at most resorts – for example, Occidental Tamarindo offers this option as part of Barceló Vacations. The simplicity of such a package is much appreciated by many travelers. However, limiting yourself to resorts that offer this will eliminate many great options, so we encourage travelers to consider handling flights themselves.
A Brief History of Costa Rica
Costa Rica means “rich coast,” and this name likely comes from Christopher Columbus’ observation when he sailed near its Caribbean coast in the early 1500s; he saw native people wearing lots of gold and silver jewelry. Interestingly, Costa Rica was at a geographical crossroads when it came to indigenous people, hosting only scattered tribes of both Andean and Mesoamerican peoples.
The lack of a true native population made life difficult for Spanish rulers and settlers, as there wasn’t a good source of labor to work on hacienda plantations, and Costa Rica was known as a poor place. However, the cultivation of Costa Rican coffee in the early 1800s saw a huge success, displacing tobacco, sugar, and other crops.
It was around the same time that Costa Rica gained independence as a nation and slowly became more wealthy and modernized. Later, tourism and other industries would help propel the country to become one of the richest and most stable countries in Central America.
This stability continues today, and it’s one of the reasons visitors feel so comfortable enjoying the beauty and nature of the country. Costa Rica has protected around a quarter of its highly biodiverse ecosystems, reversed deforestation, and utilized renewable energy for nearly all of its needs. For these reasons, there are fewer better places in this part of the world for ecotourism and outdoor adventures.
Feel Like Getting Out of the Resort?
With such stunning resorts, it can be tempting to plant yourself on a lounge chair for your week in Costa Rica. But if there was ever a place to force yourself out, even for one day, this is it. The waters, beaches, and jungles of Costa Rica are unbelievably unique and exotic.
Surfing (and Other Watersports)
Costa Rica is surely the surf capital of Central America. Surfers from around the world come for long, consistent waves, regardless of size. Conditions at many beaches are beginner-friendly, whether you want to hire a surf school teacher or simply rent a board and paddle out.
The most famous surf towns in Costa Rica are Tamarindo and Jacó, both in Guanacaste. While many resorts all over the west coast are on beaches fit for surfing, these have reliable breaks and excellent infrastructure, including a ton of surf shops and schools. The towns have great dining, shopping, and some nightlife as well, making them popular even for non-surfers.
While our spotlight is on surfing, that’s certainly not the only way to have fun in the water. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, jet skis, wakeboards, and other toys can be borrowed or rented from providers all over the coast, including resorts. Snorkeling and diving are both fantastic, too.
Ziplining
There’s just something about flying across the treetops in beautiful places, and Costa Rica is one of the places where ziplining is absolutely breathtaking. With so many different types of landscapes and so much untouched nature, thrill seekers will find countless opportunities to try this across the country.
An eco-park near Hotel Riu Guanacaste has a thrilling network of ziplines, including an ocean view, and this is a convenient place to reach from most Guanacaste resorts. Jacó has one in its backcountry as well. Visitors who go further, especially to the national parks deeper into the countryside, will find many, many more and can combine this activity with others.
Volcanic Hot Springs
With more than 200 volcanically active spots around the country, Costa Rica has hot springs scattered all over. These naturally heated pools of water seem almost too great to be real – imagine relaxing in a bathtub put together by nature, heated by the earth, and surrounded by pure jungle wilderness.
That’s very possible to do, including in Guanacaste, at places like Rio Negro and Pacayas. Rincón de la Vieja National Park is a great place to look for more, and if you’re willing to make a longer voyage, the Arenal Preserve is home to the most famous volcano in Costa Rica. There’s usually a small admission fee to cover the upkeep and preservation of pools, and you can find ones with varying temperatures to fit your preferences.
Rafting & River Tours
Adding to the natural wonders of Costa Rica are rivers and their raging rapids, which cut through the jungle in many parts of the country. Seeing everything from the water can be a magnificent way to take in the scenery and wildlife, and an exciting way as well.
Class III and IV rapids exist in Guanacaste, and the most popular place for white water rafting there is the Tenorio River, which is thrilling even for seasoned rafters. Calmer waters can be found further inland in deep gorges near Arenal for those who just want to float along peacefully. Calmer rivers also may offer the opportunity to float along in a tube – a refreshing and relaxing way to appreciate the Costa Rican jungle’s beauty!
National Parks, Hiking, & Wildlife Viewing
Finally, the catch-all for Costa Rican wild adventures. Whether you can’t decide what jungle activities to do, you don’t want to focus on one single experience, or you don’t want anything too exhilarating, simply joining a guided tour of these nature preserves is the perfect way to encompass it all – or, you can even self-drive it.
Some of the most popular preserves are Guanacaste National Park, Arenal Volcano National Park, Palo Verde, and, if you’ll be in the south of the country, Corcovado. There is no shortage of guides, bus transportation, and small group tours that can show you the magnificent trails, waterfalls, viewpoints, and exotic animals of these places. Check out your resort’s activities page for inspiration.
