Where to buy Shibumi Shade:

The Shibumi Shade is a beach canopy alternative that harnesses the power of the wind to stay upright.

Usually, windy days at the beach mean struggling to keep a beach umbrella or tent upright. That’s not the case with the Shibumi Shade. And soon they will be offering a “Wind Assist” add on to anchor the back of the shade to keep it upright in the event there is no wind.

Its biggest selling points are being extremely lightweight and portable while providing up to 150 square feet of shade. Its biggest scrutiny? Being overpriced at $270. So, we had to test it out for ourselves to see if it was worth the hype.

We took the Shibumi Shade to an ocean beach on a mildly windy day. While there are a lot of good things to say about it, there are a few drawbacks worth mentioning too.

Dive in to find out how the Shibumi Shade held up to our standards and if it’s worth the price tag.

Shibumi Shade: “Effortless Perfection”

The Japanese term Shibumi refers to the idea of beauty in simplicity. We found the Shibumi Shade true to its name, with a concept that’s simple yet effective.

In the case of the Shibumi Shade, less is more. Less hassle, less weight, less assembly…more shade, more years of use, more portability.

While it’s nearly perfect, we can’t ignore a few minor problems we ran into while using it. Our full review below will include everything you need to know about the Shibumi Shade and things to consider before purchasing.

Assembly Is A Breeze

Shibumi Shade Setting Up

The Shibumi Shade comes with the following items:

  • Carrying bag
  • Canopy
  • Collapsible poles
  • Sandbag

We found setting the beach canopy up to be incredibly easy and quick. First, you connect the poles and thread it through the canopy. Then, you plant the poles in the sand to create an arch-like shape. For extra stability, fill up the sandbag and extend it out from the center of the arch. That’s it!

However, there’s still room for improvement. The poles slide into sand pretty easily, but we’re not sure it could be set up somewhere else like a grassy park or dirt road. This really limits its usage to the beach.

As far as other beach canopies go, we think this is one of the easiest and most straightforward setups we’ve come across.

Of course, if you’re only planning to take it to the beach, that won’t be an issue. But if you’re looking for a more versatile shade option to take to both the beach and other outdoor events, this won’t work. Instead, we’d recommend the Sun Ninja or the Sport-Brella XL.

Wind Will Be Your Friend

The whole point of the Shibumi Shade is that it works with the wind rather than against it. According to their website, it requires as little as a 3 mph wind to stay upright.

We tested the shade on a very mild day with almost no wind. Surprisingly, the gentle ocean breeze was enough to keep our beach canopy afloat almost all day long.

We say almost because there was one instance where the fabric did fall flat when the wind was completely gone. It was only for a brief moment, so it wasn’t really an issue for us. However, it’s something to keep in mind if you frequently visit lakeside beaches or quiet inlets. Their new add-on “Wind Assist” will make sure the beach canopy can stay up without wind, but it also comes at an extra price.

On the other hand, how does the Shibumi Shade perform in strong winds? Though we can’t personally attest to it, many customers provide positive feedback. Since the canopy doesn’t have a rigid structure like other beach umbrellas, the Shibumi Shade is much less likely to fly away in strong wind gusts.

Some reviews mention the shade being very loud on particularly windy days, similar to a flag flapping in the wind. This was not our experience. Maybe it’s because we didn’t take it out on a very windy day, but it could also be because of a recent improvement to the fabric the company made in response to customer feedback. More on that later!

Let’s Talk About the Shibumi Shade Coverage

The claim of providing 150 square feet of shade seemed too good to be true. But lo and behold – we did find that the Shibumi Shade delivers in the shade department.

With enough sun shade to fit about 4-6 people, the Shibumi Shade offers a lot more shade than the average beach umbrella or tent. The extra space is great for kids, pets, beach chairs, or coolers.

Shibumi Shade Busy Beach

The amount of shade does come with a few downsides, though. First, depending on where the sun is, you might need to position the Shibumi Shade at an awkward angle or facing away from the beach.

Second, its big size means it can obstruct views for other beachgoers. This is among one of the reasons why the Shibumi Shade was banned from several particularly busy beaches on the East Coast.

Price/Quality Ratio

The Shibumi Shade is made from durable materials like aluminum and water resistant polyester that last many years. The beach canopy’s stability in the wind minimizes the chance of blowing away and getting damaged. Easy assembly requires no sand anchors or extra accessories. These factors point it to being a high-quality and long-lasting product.

On top of that, the Shibumi Shade is covered by a one year warranty. Their customer service gets rave reviews, and they offer replacement parts and repair kits upon request. It seems like they take their promise of 100% satisfaction guaranteed pretty seriously. They’ve even listened to the feedback from customers to deliver a “new and improved” version that is quieter, stronger, and provides a higher UPF protection.

Now, is it really worth the $270 price tag? Well, that simply depends on what you’re searching for. It definitely provides ample shade and good sun protection. It’s easy to set up and even easier to travel with. If you’re intrigued by the concept and ingenuity of it, we think you’ll be satisfied with the purchase.

However, it may be limited to beach use, since it requires sand to be set up and wind to stay upright. If that doesn’t align with your travel plans, it’s probably not worth the purchase. If your main hesitation is the price, you might be interested in a few cheaper alternatives such as the Osoeri Beach Tent or the Sport-Brella Super-Brella.

Do We Recommend It?

The bottom line is: yes, we recommend the Shibumi Shade for the beachgoers who are traveling with a group and value portability and ease. The Shibumi Shade offers a surprising amount of shade for such a lightweight and compact beach canopy. It looks cool and it’ll keep you cool for all your breezy beach days!
