Solid Product with Misleading Fine Print

Upon first inspection we were pretty happy with the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair. It has solid construction, a colorful design, convenient portability, and low-sitting comfort, providing nearly every basic need we have come to expect of a beach chair.

While we appreciated the addition of a cup holder, the design of it felt a bit like a cheap afterthought – several customer reviews report it tearing or falling off entirely after only a few uses.

This may not be a deal breaker for most, but we found it a bit odd and a little unsettling that much of the information listed in the product description was incorrect – both on the Amazon product page and the Coleman website. For instance, the weight is listed at 5.3 lbs when the chair weighed in at 7 lbs, the fabric contents are extremely vague, simply listed as “Synthetic,” and even the listed seat height is misleading – it is listed as 10 inches when the back of the seat is practically flush to the ground.

Thankfully the chair was still a quality product, but just be sure to read the 3rd party and customer reviews for the most accurate specs.

Material

Like many chairs on our list, the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair features a sturdy, powder-coated steel frame that can withstand beach elements, ensuring the longevity of the chair.

While the steel frame is nice, we tend to prefer beach chairs that are made with aluminum, like the Rio Beach Classic Folding Chair or the Lawn Chair USA. Aluminum seems to perform better against rust and is usually quite a bit lighter than powder-coated steel.

The seat and back fabric are simply listed in the product description as “synthetic,” not specifying exactly what kind of fabric is used. That being said, whatever it may be, it is soft to the touch, gentle on the skin, and water-resistant. The chair also came complete with a matching carry bag, which helped to keep our hands free, toting it to and from the beach.

The chair’s waterproof coated fabric is good for the longevity of the product, but it ended up becoming a bit of a nuisance as water tended to pool in the seat. A little bit of mesh on the seat would have gone a long way, both in terms of allowing drainage and airflow for faster drying and also in maintaining an overall cool, comfortable seating experience.

While a mesh seat could have added a nice layer of breathability, its overall quality, portability, and ability to combine comfort with beach-worthy toughness kept the overall quality of the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair on par.

Although the product description (on both Amazon and the Coleman website) inaccurately states a weight of 5.3 lbs, many customers mentioned it was heavier than expected, and we actually weighed it in at 7 lbs. Although the incorrect information in the description is strange, ultimately, it’s still pretty lightweight compared to the Ostrich Deluxe 3-n-1 Beach Chair or the Mac Sports Beach Chair.

It’s worth noting the seat of the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair sits very low. The description claims the seat sits 10 inches off the ground, but the seat is angled upwards, with the back sitting nearly flush with the ground. Low chairs like this are typically not very well suited for seniors or those with limited mobility, so be sure to shop accordingly.

Don’t be fooled by the lightweight convenience – the chair’s powder-coated steel frame helps with overall stability, supporting up to 250 lbs. The materials used for the frame also add a degree of rust resistance.

This thoughtful design feature helps extend the life of the chair in beachfront environments where salt and moisture can wreak havoc on less durable materials. The chair’s feet are also specifically designed for the beach, allowing it to rest on uneven, sandy surfaces.

Though some customer reviews report minor sticking while unfolding, we found the setup to be very easy and intuitive – and putting it away for the day was just as easy. While it may seem like a small thing, we liked that the chair packs back into its carrying case relatively easily, really streamlining cleanup and packing.

Ringing in at $43 on Amazon, we found ourselves slightly underwhelmed by the overall value of the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair.

While it certainly does the job, we found that it was comparable in quality, performance, and comfort to several other more affordable beach chairs on our list, like the Cascade Mountain Tech Beach Chair or even the AmazonBasics Beach Chair. By no means do we believe this product is a waste of money, but we just think there are better deals out there.

From Bag to Beach

Overall, we weren’t wowed by the Coleman Utopia Breeze Beach Chair, but it undeniably does the job. Between the durability of materials, the stability and portability of the design, and of course, the use of beautiful, vibrant beach colors, we have little to complain about in terms of functionality – we just wish the price was a bit more of a bargain.
