What’s Special About This Resort
The Woodlands Resort is one of the best all-around family resorts in Texas, but we’re singling it out for its amazing aquatic activities. The network of pools here is large enough to be considered a waterpark called the Forest Oasis. The main pool has a 30-foot tower home to a waterfall and racing slides, as well as underwater music and a mural. The other lagoon-style pool is more relaxing and is heated during the colder months. Puffy’s Sprayground is a fun zone for kids with fountains and splash spots, while a 1,000-foot lazy river puts the icing on the cake. Beyond all that, this beautiful resort is just 30 minutes from downtown Houston and offers golf, tennis, shopping, s’mores pits, bike rentals, and much more.
Things we like:
-
Separate adults-only pool and specific hotel floors for those who want a more relaxing stay
-
Lazy river, waterslides, and underwater music are cool amenities that set the pool experience apart
-
Lots of golf courses on-property and within easy reach
-
Complimentary shuttle transportation to nearby shopping centers
-
Huge network of hiking and jogging trails nearby
Things we don't like:
-
Access to the pools and water activities are restricted on check-in and check-out days, with certain time frames guests can access them
-
Guests are charged a daily resort fee (common nowadays but not cool)

What to Do
It may be obvious, but it would be a crime to not spend a day at the pools here. Float on a tube down the lazy river, let the waterfall rain down on you, enjoy the underwater music, or fly down the racing slides – of course, you can always lounge in the sun on the pool deck, too. Adults without kids aren’t left out, as there’s an adults-only area by the pools as well.
Besides that, hit the links of the two on-site golf courses, or take a quick drive to one of the many others nearby. There are also 21 tennis courts, 14 pickleball courts, miles of nature and jogging trails, and plenty of other outdoor activities for enjoying the Texas weather.
If you’d rather be indoors, two beautiful shopping centers are in The Woodlands, and complimentary shuttle buses can take you there. The many attractions of Houston are within a quick and easy drive, and you can even have a beach day from here – it’s just 90 minutes to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
What to Eat & Drink
The main restaurant at The Woodlands Resort is Back Table Kitchen & Bar, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu makes use of local and seasonal ingredients to bring guests southern-inspired cuisine featuring global accents, and it overlooks the beautiful 18th hole of the golf course.
Harrison’s is another elegant place for morning and midday American classics with views of the lakefront and surrounding forests – open as of June 2023 following a total renovation. Cool Water Bar & Grill is your spot for tasty bites and beverages while having a pool day, set in the middle of the Forest Oasis waterpark.
In-room dining is open for each meal of the day, and most of the resort’s most popular dishes can be brought straight to your bed or balcony. If you’re traveling over a holiday or special event, the resort often offers special meals in celebration.
Room Guide
The Woodlands Resort is a Hilton property under its Curio Collection brand. Hilton is notorious for over-defining its room types, but the resort’s independent website breaks them down much nicer and more simply, so we recommend looking there if you want all the details about each of these.
Deluxe, Balcony, and Pool Walkout: These rooms all have the same approximate layout with 425 square feet of space and one king or two queen beds. Views are of the forest, golf course, or pool, and balcony varieties add outdoor space to enjoy them. Pool Walkout rooms are on the ground floor, offering outdoor space plus direct access to the water.
Canopy Floor: While the views and arrangements of Canopy Floor rooms are the same as above, they sit on the more relaxing adults-only level for more peace and tranquility, as well as access to a special lounge area. One-bedroom suites on this level add even more space. Note that there are no ground floor rooms in this category, and the floor is only available for the summer season.
Suites: There are a number of standard suite varieties, and all have 628 square feet of space consisting of a king bed and a separate living and dining room. Three specialty suites offer even more space, more high-end furnishings and amenities, and more luxury.
Special Experiences
For the most exclusive poolside experience, guests can reserve a private cabana for the day. There are three cabana varieties that provide privacy and relaxation out of the sun, and each package comes with food and drinks. The top cabana, called the Crow’s Nest, sits at the top of the pool tower where the waterfall and slides begin, and reserving it will get you sangria and s’mores kits to enjoy around the fire pit.
The Woodlands Resort also offers the chance to try an activity that has swept Instagram by storm in recent years – goat yoga! The resort will provide the instructor, mats, and some adorable little pygmy goats that will pose right along with, on, or under you.
While the resort may not be beachfront, it is lakefront, and watersports like kayaking and paddleboarding are possible in this tranquil atmosphere. You can rent this equipment during the spring and summer, and reservations are available online.
