A Brief History of Sedona
The Spanish discovered Sedona in 1583; however, the valley Sedona resides in has been the home of the Yavapai-Apache people for seven centuries before the U.S. Cavalry pushed them out in the 1870s. Ranching and farming became popular in 1876 when settlers arrived in Oak Creek Canyon and found it deserted.
Tourists started to visit and stay in the 1950s, and Sedona became a vacation home and retirement destination in the 1980s and 90s. As more people descended on the area, it was discovered that a unique energy was found in certain areas of Sedona, known as Vortexes.
These Vortexes have spiritual and healing capabilities, making Sedona a holistic spiritual town and one of the more popular destinations in the Southwest. Over 200 local enterprises in Sedona serve those fascinated by the strong earth energy prevalent in this area.

Other Sedona places to visit are the Chapel of the Holy Cross, Montezuma Castle, Drive along the Red Rock Scenic Byway, Red Rock State Park, Slide Rock State Park to go sliding and swimming, and the Sedona Heritage Museum, where you can see early Sedona farmhouse living, learn how to rope or be roped (lots of fun for families), and make soap animals.
The other must-visit destination is to experience one of the Sedona Vortices. Vortexes are areas where the Earth’s energy is strong, usually along Ley Lines, and Sedona has many Vortex spots. Some people who visit the vortexes feel the energy coming up from the ground and swirling around them.
It is known to have a serene, subtle feeling of a higher power that many believe has healing properties, and you might see people doing yoga or meditating at these sites. The Sedona Visitor Center has a map detailing all the Vortex locations, like Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Boynton Canyon, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and the Airport Mesa.
There is much to choose from for those looking to take day trips from Sedona. You can explore the ghost town of Jerome, which is 25 miles west of Sedona. The town of Flagstaff is 30 miles north and a destination in its own right, with it being the world’s first International Dark Sky Place for stargazing and a visit to Lowel Observatory to see the telescope that discovered Pluto.
There are three amazing and completely different landscaped National Monuments to visit around Flagstaff: Walnut Canyon National Monument, where you can see early dwellings carved out inside cliffs; Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, where you can walk on Lava Lake and see where the astronauts trained before going to the moon in the 60s; and Wupatki National Monument, where you can walk a trail and see what’s left of the Wupatki pueblo dwelling.
Other further destinations to drive out and see are the mighty Grand Canyon or Antelope Canyon. The Grand Canyon National Park is 108 miles north of Sedona, and you can easily spend a full day exploring the South Rim, the Watch Tower, and sticking around to watch the sunset. Antelope Canyon is 160 miles north of Sedona, and one of the most photographed places in the Southwest.
