What’s Special About This Resort
In terms of ocean views, it doesn’t get much better than the 360 degrees of them at the MÍA Reef Isla Mujeres – this all-inclusive resort is on a little islet off the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, a tiny island off the coast of Cancun. Walking across the wooden bridge to the islet will give you an immediate hint of those views, with shallow, crystal-clear water on white sand. On the other side of the striking 164 rooms and suites, a patchwork of reef, rock, and deep blue offers different kinds of ocean views.
All stays at the MÍA Reef Isla Mujeres are all-inclusive, meaning breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are part of your stay. Beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, are also part of the package. Kids under 12 stay for free, too.
Things we like:
-
A private beach on an already very private spot on Isla Mujeres
-
The property is part of a Tern (sea bird) sanctuary, and they make important efforts towards their conservation
-
Water depth is very shallow for quite a distance making this a safe beach for kids
-
Plenty of boat and water excursions to beautiful spots around the island
-
The price point of this resort is budget-friendly
-
The “Piscina del Rey” (Pool of the King) - a natural pool in the oceanside rocks - is amazing
Things we don't like:
-
While the isolation of Isla Mujeres is part of what’s great, the journey on the ferry can be inconvenient
-
Lack of package inclusions beyond food and drink
-
Rooms are ready for an update
What to Do
A vacation to Isla Mujeres is packed with much of the fun you can have in the rest of the Riviera Maya and Cancún, but with a fraction of the tourists and in an even more laid-back atmosphere. Even if it’s just 20 minutes off the coast by ferry, Isla Mujeres really feels like a distant Caribbean island.
One of the best parts of this resort is its outstanding beach. Be sure to lounge, float, swim, snorkel, kayak, or enjoy it otherwise, because it’s really one-of-a-kind. However, you’ll find some close competitors around the island, and it’s a great idea to rent a golf cart to explore.
Towards the southern point of the island, a park called Garrafon Natural Reef Park offers experiences like ziplining and snorkeling at another fantastic beach that has particularly exceptional reef life near shore. Just off the coast from there, the MUSA underwater art museum is one of the few places in the world where you can snorkel or dive through sculptures on the seafloor – one of the most famous attractions on Isla Mujeres.
Traditional scuba diving and snorkeling cruises reveal exotic sights like whale sharks and turtles. In fact, there is a spot off the coast of the resort called the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks. If that doesn’t sound like your kind of activity, be sure to visit the Piscina del Rey – a massive, natural pool on the coast beside the resort, which surely won’t have any sharks in it.
What to Eat & Drink
There are four restaurants on the property, as well as a coffee shop. Sarimar Restaurant offers three buffets a day, where you’ll find a wide array of familiar breakfast options. Lunch transforms it into stations for pizzas, pastas, fish, and the most popular – fajitas. For dinner, you’ll find plenty of Mexican and Caribbean specialties, with an emphasis on grilled meats.
Las Marías is another dinner option that’s very romantic, offering gourmet dishes à-la-carte. Mexican specialties and flavors are used on meat, lobster, duck, fish, and much more in this elegant atmosphere.
The Cevichería is the place for a casual lunch by the sea, specializing in shrimp ceviche, as is the Blue Moon Bar, serving international favorites like burgers and salads. Drinks, coffee, and sweet treats can be taken to stay or to go at the Coffee Gallery.
Room Guide
There are nine categories of rooms and villas available at the resort, mostly varying in view and size. All are decorated with trendy and simple Mexican designs and are equipped with modern comfort amenities.
Deluxe Room: The most basic and most affordable category, furnished with one queen bed, a coffee maker and minibar, and black-out blinds.
Superior Ocean Front, Deluxe Ocean View, and Grand Emerald: Ocean view options come in these categories, with floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy maximum scenery. The latter two have balconies with sitting space as well.
Deluxe Villa: You’ll get extra space in these larger rooms in a separate section of the resort on its northern end. One king or two double beds are available in the villas, and these come with a mini-fridge in a refreshment nook.
Deluxe Bathtub Ocean View and Honeymoon Jacuzzi Ocean View Suite: Romantic options that come with a bit more space and luxurious jacuzzi tubs on their balconies to enjoy those spectacular views.
Luxury Ocean View Junior Suite: A great option for families or groups that has two beds plus a sofa bed, as well as an awesome view.
The Grand Aqua Villa: This villa is the resort’s top-of-the-top, with a ton of space indoors and outdoors, including direct beach access. Snorkel equipment, kayaks, and a hammock complete the spacious terrace, and Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries are stocked in the bathroom.
Special Experiences
Besides the wonderful experiences of being on the resort’s beach and eating at its restaurants, there’s more that can make your stay extra special. For one, don’t miss the opportunity to swim and snorkel in the Piscina del Rey, a swimming pool shaped by nature itself and exclusive to the resort.
To get away from the crowds, rent a small boat nearby and explore the coast on your own. If you’d rather just enjoy the ride, you can arrange one with a captain, too. Charters or tours can take you to spots to dive with whale sharks for something really special.
At the resort spa, a wide range of treatments is available for a less adventurous and more relaxing day. There’s also a deluxe couples spa suite available for your treatment.
