What’s Special About This Resort
While Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club is our top choice of Belize resorts for beach people, they may be shocked to notice that this resort is not on the beach! But still, it takes the prize thanks to its separate beach club on a tiny island off the western side of Ambergris Caye. It’s accessible via a scenic 15-minute boat ride.
This setup gives you the best of everything: convenient access to San Pedro, the private island experience, and the white-sand, seaweed-free shores on the good side of Belize’s most popular tourist spot – something other Ambergris Caye’s other resorts don’t have.
It also helps with the price point, as you don’t have to pay private island resort prices here. At the main resort, you have access to beautiful swimming pools, diverse dining, and all kinds of things to do around San Pedro.
Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club is not an all-inclusive resort, but you can easily book a package that includes breakfast. Other special packages include resort credits that can be used to cover dining, spa treatments, and activities.
Things we like:

-
Activities like diving, snorkeling, and fishing available straight from the resort dock
-

-
Accessing the beach club requires a 15-minute boat ride, which can be inconvenient for those who want to come and go
-

➞ What to Do
Of course, you have to take advantage of the awesome beach club at Mahogany Bay Resort. The boat trip departs from the resort dock every 30 minutes, and it takes about 15 minutes of cruising over many shades of blue to reach the caye. It’s a first-come, first-served line, so allow yourself time if the resort is busy – but luckily, the Beach Club is for resort guests only!
Once there, you can enjoy white sand and warm, clear water. There are beach chairs, overwater hammocks, and even overwater day beds to relax on. Non-motorized watersports, games, and toys are free, as are changing rooms and bathrooms; a full-service bar and restaurant are also there to keep you satisfied.
Back at the resort, you can relax some more at The Bay Club, which hosts a large swimming pool surrounded by loungers and cabanas, plus food and drink service. The Village is a busy little “downtown” in this resort community with additional dining and local shopping, and it’s just minutes from your room.
If you rent a golf cart, which is available directly on property, it’s easy to hop into San Pedro and see the rest of Ambergris Caye. The concierge can arrange snorkel and diving excursions, jungle adventures, offshore cruises, and much more.
➞ What to Eat & Drink
There’s quite a bit of variety for dining and drinking around Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club, with three restaurants, four bars and cafés, and service on the private island. The day starts at The Verandah, a large and upscale dining room that lays out a large breakfast buffet.
The Verandah stays open for dining all day, with an upscale lunch and dinner menu focusing on Caribbean cuisine. You can grab some of the best tacos on the island, plus fresh-squeezed juices, at Taco Shack for lunch. Finally, you can get both lunch and dinner at Jyoto, serving high-grade sushi made from fish caught in the surrounding waters.
As mentioned, there’s a full-service bar and restaurant at the Beach Club, so there’s no need to come back midday if you don’t want to. Other bars to grab drinks around the property include Shaken, with signature cocktails and craft beer, plus light bites; Stirred, for upscale craft cocktails; and The Dirty Martini, the bar at The Village. Both coffee drinks and rum cocktails are served at Rum Bean, a do-not-miss.
➞ Room Guide
With 205 suites, cottages, and villas, Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club is one of the larger ones on our list. But rather than a traditional hotel building divided into rooms, this place is spread out into a little village, with mostly standalone accommodations. There are only a few “standard” room options but an abundance of much larger choices.
Upper & Lower Keeping Suites: These are the resort’s version of standard rooms, with king-bed versions on the upper level of the units and two-queen-bed versions below. They’re very spacious with separate sitting rooms, with Lower Suites slightly larger.
Cottages: Rather than duplex buildings with two units, these are standalone rooms. Garden Cottages are slightly smaller than the above but still offer plenty of space to spread out, along with a beautiful terrace. The Pied-a-Terre upgraded cottage adds a kitchen, laundry, and even more space.
Townhomes & Villas: The largest options of all are two-, three-, or four-bedroom units in either townhouse-style buildings or standalone villas. They have all the comforts a large family might need, including full kitchens, laundry, and huge living spaces, and some even have private swimming pools.
➞ Special Experiences
If you want to maximize your experience at Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club’s beautiful private island, you will surely want to have a private VIP cabana for the day. These, along with the overwater day beds and hammocks, are unfortunately not reservable, so plan to be on the first boat of the day to make sure you get the one (and the Instagram shots) you want.
One offshore activity offered at this resort stands out for visitors who like to try new things and want to help preserve the unique marine environment around Belize. You can go lionfish hunting with a spear alongside a local guide for a thrilling experience that actually does good. This species, with its poisonous spikes, is invasive and threatens around 70 native ones, so helping eliminate them is a good thing. They’re hard to find but quite slow, making this an exciting hunt.
