The Rocky Mountains come from Utah’s northeastern corner, running along the same side of Salt Lake City. From there they continue in a southwesterly direction, slicing through the state. This proximity to this great mountain range means there are plenty of hikes, from or a little further out from the city.
Aptly named Mt Olympus, this is an 8-mile hike, that provides stunning aerial views over Salt Lake City. Bells Canyon’s trail is a great way to witness Utah’s dramatic seasons, and whether you see the fall leaves, the frosty waterfalls, or spring wildflowers, the hike is always spectacular.
Down in Utah’s southeast corner is the arid Colorado Plateau. This desert region is filled with striking sandstone canyons and arches of red and orange hues. Although a longer 4-hour drive from Salt Lake City, The Arches, and The Canyonlands are both national parks worth the day (or two) trip!
Hitting the Slopes
You probably already know, but the main reason many people come to Salt Lake City is for the snow! With the Rocky Mountains just on their doorstep, there are multiple good ski resorts to choose from.
The most famous and fashionable is the Park City Ski Resort, which is North America’s largest ski resort and famed for its Olympian reputation. There are 7,300 acres of skiable area, with 348 ski runs, with which a third are expert level! If skiing is your thing, then Park City Ski Resort is your place!
However, if that sounds a little over the top for you, then perhaps a more low-key resort like Brighton is more your style. Brighton Ski Resort only has 66 runs and not much in terms of apres-ski nightlife. But it’s the insane powder, 3 terrain parks, and 6 days-a-week nighttime skiing that keep bringing people back.
Lakeside Thrills
Being in a landlocked state, you’d be forgiven if watersports weren’t first on your list of things to do around Salt Lake City. However, of course, Utah is home to the Great Salt Lake and also many other lakes, both fresh and saltwater.
Despite its colossal size, there are only a handful of launch points into the Great Salt Lake, a popular one being on Antelope Island State Park. Here you can set off on your kayak or stand-up paddle board and cruise through this unique watery landscape. The island itself is a great place for other outdoor pastimes, like camping and spotting the free-roaming bison.
Tucked away in the Rocky Mountains is the Silver Lake Reservoir. This picturesque freshwater lake, surrounded by glorious peaks, is great for anyone looking for a back-to-nature break. Here you can peacefully camp, set up a line in the hope of some rainbow trout, or perhaps even see a moose pass through.
Another water-based thrill, though not necessarily lakeside, is hot springs, both mineral and geothermal. Some, such as Homestead Crater, are on private property and require an entrance fee. Homestead Crater goes down to a reasonable 65 feet (20m), and there is the opportunity to even go scuba diving here! Less glamorous (but free!) pools include Winter Meadow and Gandy Warm Springs.
