What’s Special About This Resort
Saying that you’ll be surrounded by nature at the Gaïa Riverlodge is an understatement – this place is an hour-long jeep ride away from the nearest small village, San Ignacio, close to the Guatemalan border.
The jungle lodge is perched atop the Five-Sisters Waterfall, which, along with the local wildlife, provides the only noise in this remote Belize resort paradise. Individual cabanas are scattered among the greenery, and an electric tram takes guests down to the river itself.
Ancient caves, Mayan archaeological sites, and natural swimming holes are all around and just some of the wonders to be explored over the course of your stay. Spa treatments and local dining with home-grown ingredients are some of the things waiting for you when you get back to the resort.
Gaïa Riverlodge is not an all-inclusive resort, but breakfast can be included in your room rate. There are several special packages that bundle different things together as well.

➞ What to Do
Almost all of your entertainment at Gaïa Riverlodge will be provided by nature. There is no swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers here. Instead, that luxury is provided by the waterfall and river, which creates expansive natural swimming holes to cool off in. You can hike down to it or take the electric tram, which the river also powers.
There’s much more to explore further in the jungle. Join a morning hike with one of the guides to start your day with magical natural scenery. Take one of the complimentary mountain bikes to hit the trails and explore further. You’ll probably find a cave or two to peer into, if not a panoramic spot to stop and take in the view.
Guided excursions can take you birdwatching, canoeing along the Macal River, ziplining through the treetops, or floating along cave-covered rivers. There are tons of Mayan ruins, archaeological sites, and cultural monuments to admire.
Don’t miss the chance to dedicate part of a day to a riverside spa treatment at the resort, with materials from the Belizean, Mexican, and Guatemalan wilderness to keep it totally natural. Similarly, you can tour the restaurant’s organic garden with the resident Mayan farmer.
➞ What to Eat & Drink
The Gaïa Riverlodge’s restaurant is the only one – there’s another nearby jungle resort about 20 minutes away, but you won’t find many alternatives besides that. Luckily, they get the food and drink just right, and there should be something for everyone.
A continental breakfast spread is available to all guests every morning, with a few local and international specials available to order as well. Lunch and dinner borrow recipes from the rest of Latin America, the Mediterranean, and America while making sure to incorporate Belizean specialties and flavors. The use of the products of the on-site organic garden is maximized for an unbelievably fresh taste every time.
➞ Room Guide
Rooms at Gaïa Riverlodge reflect the nature they’re steeped in, nearly blending right into the jungle with their thatched roofs and wooden construction. They may not have air conditioning, wifi, or television, but evenings are pleasantly cool, and this isn’t a place to be on the phone anyway. There are just a few category choices, boiling down to view, size, and location.
Mountain View & Waterfall View Cabanas: Whether your view is of the treetops or the water, you’ll surely hear nothing but the distant cascade and the birds chirping around you. These rooms are about 350 square feet in size and come with one king bed, making them perfect for couples.
Waterfall View Suite: This suite is perfect for families who want to take advantage of its upstairs bedroom and downstairs living room with a sofa bed and extra bathroom. However, it’s also perfect for couples who simply want the panoramic view of the waterfall and the river valley just outside its windows and terrace.
Private Riverside Villa: The resort’s most exceptional accommodation is alone on the banks of the river, far separated from everything else. It has a living room, a kitchen, and several screened-in terraces, one of which is complete with a hot tub.
➞ Special Experiences
Visitors who want to fully indulge themselves in the jungle at Gaïa Riverlodge should check out the many retreats that the resort hosts over the course of the year. With themes like Birding & Photography, Art & Yoga, and Women’s Retreats, you may be able to find a specially curated vacation with like-minded people from all over the world that beats a DIY stay.
If the rainforest concept is tempting, but you don’t want to give up time along the beautiful Belizean coast, then don’t – there are several special packages in conjunction with Gaïa’s sister property, Matachica Resort. Look at the resort’s vacation packages like the Land to Sea Vacation to get the best of both worlds, along with a lower price.
