What’s Special About This Resort
Copal Tree Lodge is a southern Belize resort set amongst lush greenery. While that’s definitely great for nature lovers, we’re naming this one best for thrill seekers thanks to its short distance from the Caribbean Sea – making it possible to enjoy both backcountry and water-based adventures during your stay.
One day, you can be kayaking along the Rio Grande, hiking along dozens of trails, or horseback riding through the foliage. The next day, you could be snorkeling in the shallows of offshore cayes or fly fishing for tarpon in the flats. The lodge has swimming pools, a spa, and complimentary bikes for exploring the nearby town of Punta Gorda.
Guests of Copal Tree Lodge can go with an all-inclusive package if they wish. This add-on gets you three meals per day, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and round-trip transfers from the Punta Gorda airstrip.

➞ What to Do
Guests of Copal Tree Lodge have 12,000 acres of pristine nature in every direction. Start off your stay with a hike alongside one of the resort’s guides so they can show you the basics of this environment, plus provide great information on flora and fauna and how to spot them. Then, trails of all levels are yours to conquer, including through cacao and sugar cane fields.
You can also grab a canoe or kayak to explore the banks of the Rio Grande, spotting animals like toucans and monkeys. There are many spots perfect for birding, as Belize is a hotspot for all kinds of species migrating between North and South America.
More thrilling activities include ziplining, river tubing, waterfall swimming, and ATVing in the jungle. You can float further down the river, all the way to the Caribbean Sea, for a day of snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef. Fishing, both on the river and in the sea, is also possible, and the chef will be ready to cook your catch.
There’s plenty of space to kick back, relax, and reflect on the adventures of each day, including a resort swimming pool and a private infinity pool in the treetops for guests staying in the Signature Canopy Suites. There’s also a spa and a yoga palapa, along with a very large gym.
➞ What to Eat & Drink
There’s just one restaurant and one bar at Copal Tree Lodge. Both utilize not only produce grown at the large on-site farm but also items foraged from the surrounding rainforest. The farm also grows cacao that’s made into chocolate on-site and produces ingredients used to make rum at its distillery.
The restaurant is called The Garden Table, and it serves all meals à la carte. Latino, American, and Belizean dishes are included in the breakfast and lunch menus, while dinner changes daily depending on available produce, fish, and meat.
The Rum Bar is an alternative for drinks, plus daily complimentary snacks in the early evening. Cocktails are constructed from local fruit juices and the resort’s homemade rum, and guests can find books and games here in case they encounter a rainy day.
➞ Room Guide
Copal Tree Lodge has just 16 suites and one family villa, making it a small and intimate experience for the few guests staying at any given time. No matter which you choose, you can guarantee beautiful jungle views and high-quality luxury amenities in your room – including wifi and air conditioning, although it goes much beyond that. It should be easy to choose between the three categories depending on what you’re looking for.
King & Queen Jungle Suites: With both large windows and screened-in balconies to enjoy the views of the lush foliage, these suites are modern islands among untouched nature. They can be configured with one king or two queen beds and have oversized showers with huge windows overlooking the jungle.
Signature Canopy Suites: These oversized suites offer king beds, day beds, and sitting areas inside, while there’s a soaking tub on the veranda outside. Besides their individual amenities, these four suites share a central private infinity pool overlooking the treetops. They are an upgrade worth considering.
Three-Bedroom Family Villa: This unique residence can accommodate up to six guests and has a living room, a kitchen, and private parking. A personal infinity plunge pool outside compliments the jungle views from multiple verandas.
➞ Special Experiences
If you’re coming to Copal Tree Lodge for specific adventures, it’s worth looking into their special packages. Not only will you get the all-inclusive dining benefits, you’ll also get activities for each day of your stay – focused on fly fishing, birding, or cultural immersion.
Special packages for romance, special events, and combined stays at the resort’s ocean caye sister property are also available.
The resort’s on-site farm, cacao fields, and distillery create some very unique opportunities for guests. You can take a Bean to Bar Chocolate Class, a Rum Distillery Tour, a Tortilla Making Class, and take part in other similar experiences. You’ll even get a tasty treat at most of them.
