What’s Special About This Resort
There are a ton of romantic all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, but the Andaz at Peninsula Papagayo is our choice for a couple’s escape. Besides the sparkling infinity swimming pools overlooking the sea from high above, this resort’s suites and villas offer private plunge pools for those on a very special vacation.
There are two sandy beaches just a short walk down the hill, complete with plenty of water toys. But the third one, Playa Nacascolo, will make you feel even more distant from the world, with its mangrove-lined perimeter and brand-new beach club.
Excellent dining, entertainment, and spa services round the whole experience off nicely, while adventures into the jungles and backcountry captivate more of the Pura Vida of Costa Rica.
You can select an all-inclusive rate at the Andaz Costa Rica by booking the Food & Drinks Package. This adds breakfast, lunch, dinner, and minibar snacks, plus non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic ones from a select list.
Things we like:

-
Some adults-only facilities but plenty of family-friendly amenities as well
-

Things we don't like:

All-inclusive rate does have black-out dates and isn’t always available
-
Just three restaurants plus the beach club
➞ What to Do
The Andaz Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo is secluded in a beautiful spot on a hill above the shore. One of the biggest strong points of this resort is the pool experience. The infinity edges overlook the turquoise sea from high above, with the mountains and shores of the peninsula’s mainland opposite. There is an adults-only option as well.
Just a few steps down the hill are two beach experiences: Sombrero Osculo and Sombrero Claro, sandy coves separated by some mangroves and rugged terrain. Take the Nature to Coral Trail between them – it’s a 25-minute snorkel through a coral sanctuary with turtles and rays, plus a nature walk on land among the iguanas and monkeys.
If you’d rather relax on your beach day, take the 10-minute resort boat ride to Nacascolo Beach, a remote cove with its own sun loungers and beach club. Or, relax instead in the 11,000-square-foot wellness center with a massage.
Peninsula Papagayo is surrounded by adventure on all sides, and it’s easy to plan excursions from this resort. River tube through the jungle, sail to the best scuba and snorkel spots, or immerse yourself in local culture before returning to all the food, drink, and luxury of the Andaz.
➞ What to Eat & Drink
Andaz Costa Rica has three restaurants, a brand-new beach club, and in-room dining. The day starts at Rio Bhongo, the main restaurant adjacent to the pools, with both an extensive buffet and an à-la-carte menu.
Rio Bhongo also serves an international, healthy comfort food menu for lunch, both by the pool and in the restaurant. The other midday option for adults only is Ostra, also poolside, serving reimagined Costa Rican fare.
Ostra is a dinner option as well, but it’s served in the restaurant (rather than poolside) and open to all guests. Rio Bhongo offers an extensive evening menu of meats and fish underneath a magically illuminated Higueron tree. Finally, Chao Pescao is another possibility, serving drinks and Latin American tapas with an incredible view from the hillside.
➞ Room Guide
The 25 villas, 21 suites, and various guest rooms of Andaz Costa Rica all have an “elegant treehouse” feeling to them. All are of great quality, and no one should be disappointed with their room, but there is a wide range of space and luxury available to choose from.
Guest Rooms: Guests can choose from resort view, forest view, and partial or full-bay view. Rooms are furnished with one king or two double beds, and all have a spacious terrace, floor-to-ceiling windows, and riverstone rain showers.
Suites: If you’re on a special trip, suites at this resort are seriously worth considering, as they’re beautifully outfitted and have a ton of extra space. Go with an Andaz Large Suite or the Presidential Suite if you’d like to have a private plunge pool on your terrace.
Villas: The most prestigious rooms at the resort range in size from one to three bedrooms, and each has its own private plunge pool on an oversized terrace overlooking the sea. Residential amenities like kitchens and indoor-outdoor living spaces make these ideal for groups as well.
➞ Special Experiences
To make your stay at Andaz Costa Rica exceptional, consider one of the room upgrades mentioned just above, as the suites and villas mentioned are more than one or two steps above the standard guest room experience. If that’s out of reach, the ocean-view guest room varieties are special, too.
The resort makes it easy to set up a special add-on, whether it’s a romantic gesture or a unique experience. Visit this page to arrange welcome amenities, yoga and meditation sessions, a private dinner, or a local farm experience, for example.
