With the word “basic” in the brand, straight away you may lower your expectations a bit. At first glance, we can see the zip isn’t sturdy. These cubes have no special or extra features, and there are a few loose threads. They are missing some finer finishing touches.

That being said, the cubes are made from polyester, which means they are reasonably durable and can keep out moisture. Spilling a little water on the polyester as a test proved it didn’t let the droplets seep through.

We did like the mesh front, as it meant we could see everything we had packed, and the double zippers meant accessing them was just as easy.

Everything’s better with two zippers

One of our favorite features about the Amazon Basics Packing Cubes was their double zippers. So what’s the advantage of double zippers? This means you access your belongings from pretty much any angle, which is especially useful since these cubes run relatively large. So instead of having to dig your hand through a small opening, like with the partial openings of Osprey Ultralight, you can open the zip exactly where you want.

Keep track of what you pack

A good companion to the double zippers is the mesh panel on the lid. Double zippers are great but a little ineffective if you can’t see where to open to get that particular tee. And the mesh panels mean you can easily see everything you’ve packed.

Now you don’t have to tediously individually open every cube to see what’s inside or who it belongs to. At a quick glance everyone can get their allocated cube.

Also, the mesh panel makes sure that your clothes stay ventilated. This helps prevent mildew forming and any resulting odors.

The mesh panel also means that the capacity of the cubes can be “stretched” a little.

Organize Your Luggage Affordably

Amazon Basics Packing Cubes are available in 7 different colors, including two shades of blue, an apple green, and a tomato red. Since suitcases usually have a dark lining, the brighter colors make them easy to see.

Another benefit is that each family member can have their own color! Gone are the days of slowly unpacking and segregating each individual item. Now everyone can just grab their cubes and job done!

Large Open Flat Space

Although sizes will differ between different brands, in general, these Amazon Basics Packing Cubes do run a little larger than their competitors. The large is almost 12L, whereas the Sea to Summit Hydraulic Large Packing Cube is 7L.

There are pros and cons to both smaller and larger models, which is considered better is just down to personal preference and needs. With the Amazon Basics Packing Cubes you get 4 different sizes for what you need.

The design of these cubes has a large flat space which makes it lie flat in a suitcase easily. We also found this design especially handy in the home for various situations. You could pack seasonal items in them and have them easily lay flat on shelves . The cubes’ handles are on the side, so grabbing them down off a shelf is easily done.

Price/Quality Ratio

With the clue in the name, these basic cubes come with a lower price point than many other packing cubes. The trade-off here is that, yes, you do get to save some money, but with lower level of quality.

Going on vacation and traveling tends to be pretty costly, and so understandably, you might opt for a cheaper packing cube. Getting 4 cubes for $25 is a good offer and an effective way to save a few cents. Although not a long-term solution, these cubes do the job.

Do we recommend them?

Although holidays are for chilling out, ironically, the run-up to them can be pretty stressful. Anything that can help is always welcome. Since Amazon Basics packing cubes have a  mesh panel on the lid, we found them to be better for suitcases.

We can imagine these are probably more appealing to families who want to effortlessly separate and organize everyone’s belongings. These packing cubes are less suited to long-term backpackers who would like something more minimal and with compression.
