Always be alert and aware of your surroundings, never travel late at night (especially outside of major cities), and be sure to use only registered taxis and transportation. Drink responsibly and avoid going out alone. Petty theft is pretty common too, so either leave the valuables at home or keep your belongings hidden when out and about.
While many of the beaches in Mexico are ideal for taking a dip in, some of them (particularly on the Pacific coast) are actually really dangerous because of strong undertows and currents. Always check surf conditions and be mindful of any warning flags. A green flag indicates the water is safe for swimming, a yellow flag means you should use caution while swimming, a red flag signifies dangerous conditions, and a black flag means do not swim.
