Feel Like Getting Out Of The Resort? Your Guide To Mexico

The third largest country in Latin America, Mexico is divided into nine regions. The most popular regions for tourism include Baja California, the Pacific Coast, Oaxaca, and the Yucatán Peninsula. Taking a look from coast to coast, you’ll find everything from spectacular beaches and lush jungles to bustling metropolitan areas and quaint local towns. The country’s rich history and culture is evident in much of the land today, whether in the well-preserved ruins of its ancient inhabitants or in the colorful traditions still practiced by locals today.

Rosewod Mayakoba Coba Pyramid

One of the best things about Mexico is the diversity of each region. No matter which part of Mexico you visit, you’ll experience a unique culture, scenery, and range of activities.

When To Visit

Being such a big country, it’s only natural that the climates vary from region to region. Generally, the dry season runs from December to April. Travel during these months and you’re almost guaranteed bright sunny days and little to no rain! The downside? This is when Mexico tends to be the most crowded and airfare and hotels are priciest.

If you want to avoid the crowds and save a little money, consider traveling to Mexico between late April through August (though be wary of hurricane season in the Yucatán Peninsula).

Perhaps the perfect balance of comfortably warm weather and affordable travel rates, November is a great time to visit since it still falls just before the high peak season. More reasons to visit in November include Dia de los Muertos festivities and the awe-inspiring monarch butterfly migration.

Top Things To Do

Another factor you’ll want to consider when planning your trip to Mexico is what you want to see and do. This will determine where you should stay to make the most of your trip.

Mexico Cabo San Lucas Arc

Visit Tulum for adventures in the Mayan jungles and  magnificent ruins such as the Chitzen Itza.  It’s also where you can explore mystical cenotes – underwater caverns that were once used for Mayan rituals.

There’s no other dive destination in the world quite like Mexico. Snorkel or dive through the famous arch at Cabo San Lucas. Swim with whale sharks and manta rays at Isla Mujeres. You also don’t want to miss out on all the cool sunken ships and MUSA (the underwater museum) in Cancun.

If you’re a foodie, visiting Oaxaca is a must. This beautiful colonial town is known for its mezcal, chocolate, and mole. It’s also where Puerto Escondido is located, where you can enjoy great seafood and catch some waves.

mexico-puerto-vallarta-muertos-pier

Looking for hiking opportunities with breathtaking views? You have to take a trip to Puerto Vallarta. The Mirador La Cruz lookout will take you up a winding staircase while showcasing the best views of Banderas Bay, the Sierra Madre mountains, and the terra-cotta rooftops of the town.

Travel Advice

Although there’s been a recent uptick in crime in Mexico these past few years, it rarely affects tourists. Even so, it’s best to follow a few precautions and use sound judgment on your trip.

Always be alert and aware of your surroundings, never travel late at night (especially outside of major cities), and be sure to use only registered taxis and transportation. Drink responsibly and avoid going out alone. Petty theft is pretty common too, so either leave the valuables at home or keep your belongings hidden when out and about.

mexico-tenochtitlan-pyramid-tourists

While many of the beaches in Mexico are ideal for taking a dip in, some of them (particularly on the Pacific coast) are actually really dangerous because of strong undertows and currents. Always check surf conditions and be mindful of any warning flags. A green flag indicates the water is safe for swimming, a yellow flag means you should use caution while swimming, a red flag signifies dangerous conditions, and a black flag means do not swim.

Where to go in Mexico for an all-inclusive resort stay

You already know you want to stay at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, but now you have to decide which area and what resort. That can be a bit daunting considering all the options out there. To help make your decision, consider the following factors and ask yourself a few questions:

  • Overall atmosphere – Are you there to relax, socialize, or a little bit of both? Do you prefer adults-only or family-friendly?
  • Location – Do you want to be right on the beach, somewhere you can walk to town, or prefer a secluded getaway?
  • Amenities – Is having a fitness center important to you? Do you want to pamper yourself at a spa? Maybe you need to drop your kids off at a Kids Club?
  • Dining – Do you prefer upscale a la carte dining options or are you a bigger fan of all-you-can-eat buffets?

With all of this in mind, head over to our list of best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico where we narrowed down the best options based on the factors listed above.

You can also check out the best resorts in each city: Tulum, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas, or Puerto Vallarta.
