The Smartwool Thermal Merino Long Neck gaiter is made of 100% Merino wool. It is longer and lighter in weight than other merino neck gaiters. It also has a snugger fit, which some may prefer but others may not like.
Despite the lighter weight, the merino wool kept us warm in freezing conditions. There was also no itchy feel, and the sweat-wicking odor-resistance properties of the wool were effective in keeping us dry.
The long fit is a great design for covering the head and ears as well as the neck on cold or windy days. The main downside would be that sometimes the stitches will pop if you stretch the gaiter too far.
Overall, we recommend this neck gaiter for any cold-weather outdoor enthusiast who prefers a snug fit to loose.
