Construction and Design

Like their 30L and 45L Travel Backpack, Peak Design 65L Travel Duffel is a complimentary member of their travel line like their other products such as the Small Wash Pouch, camera, and packing cubes. It also comes in classic PD colors Sage and Black and has the traditional duffel bag look, but with many surprises in its artillery.

Like the products we mentioned above, this waterproof duffel bag from Peak Design has a solid construction that can weather rugged use. Its 600D nylon canvas shell has a plain weave pattern, giving it a more refined and smooth-to-touch texture. But don’t be fooled! That fluidity comes with rugged overall durability. Paired with a 900D base, your items will stay safe and sound even if you set them aside on the rough ground. The material has a DWR coating to make it all better. We all know how DWR works like magic in beading off the water as soon as it hits the surface.

You won’t have any trouble with the zippers either. With big and easy-to-use #10 UltraZips, access your things with smooth sailing glides. Some duffle bags fail (frequently) by the zips. But with this one, not only do they function like butter, but they’re also weatherproof. Married with massive Hypalon pulls, opening and closing compartments of this waterproof duffel bag are effortless.

The shape of PD’s 65L Travel Duffel is also flexible. There are magnet panels at the sides to compress it. Although this was a smart move, they are not powerful enough to stay in place when the bag carries significant weight.

Harness System

We love that Peak Design 65L Travel Duffel has a very versatile harness system. Carry it however you like- as a sling bag, shoulder bag, carry it by hand, or as a backpack. It comes with a padded shoulder strap (comfy to use, even with the heavy load). But we hope that it also comes with densely padded backpack straps. You can use the hand handles for this purpose. It’s okay-ish but not comfortable enough in the long run. PD’s 65L Duffelpack would also be an excellent alternative for a hybrid bag.

You’ll also find haul loops on both sides. It is a handy feature since it can be challenging to transport oversized baggage. However, it could’ve been better if these were a bit higher, like in Marmot Long Hauler. They’re sitting almost at the bottom of the bag, giving a tendency to topple sideways when you lift it.

The straps are attached to the waterproof duffle bag via aluminum hooks. They settle in lash points easily and won’t come off as quickly—no need to worry if your belongings will drop to the ground out of nowhere.

Overall, we expected the signature robust Peak Design construction, and this 65-liter waterproof duffel bag didn’t let us down. It’s a rugged build that can handle lots of beating, making it an excellent choice for checked baggage. Storage

With a maximum capacity of 65 liters, you can fit much of your entire existence inside this waterproof duffel bag from Peak Design. It needs checking at the baggage counter, so we don’t recommend you fly with your camera using it. If you want a safe space for your camera and other tech needs, you might as well opt for their 30-liter travel backpack. Carry-on approved, with dedicated lash points for your camera cubes and a padded laptop sleeve.

Peak Design 65L Travel Duffel is a “monster gear-hauler,” and we can attest to this as truth. If you’re an over-packer or out for a lifelong backpacking escapade around the world, you need to check this one out.

Main Compartment

Simple, no obstruction, with a wide opening and gray color block lining that makes it easy to see everything inside. This large waterproof duffel bag can accommodate eight small PD packing cubes or four large ones with lots of spare room left in the main compartment. One of these units fits up to 18 liters or 20 shirts.

Silicone-coated zipped mesh pockets are also present on both sides. Your small items can safely stay put inside. Anything you don’t want within easy reach of criminal hands can also sneak in.

Now, you’ll find numerous lash points inside the main compartment dedicated to your camera cubes. If you’re not flying, perhaps on a road trip to your next photoshoot, it’s ok to utilize them. We don’t recommend you have your ever-so-precious camera equipment in checked luggage tossed around in airports like mad. And we know you don’t want that as well.

Side Pockets

This waterproof duffel bag has two sets of side pockets. Each side has one at the front with an overhanging flap and another zipped one behind that. Meaning you’ll have quick access to four different outer pockets. If you love organization, you’ll love that there’s no shortage of mesh panels in each. Your waterproof jacket, packable daypack, and water bottle will fit in. Then your Bluetooth headphones, pen, map, and mini journal can stay in the mesh sleeves.

Anti-Theft System

Another signature Peak Design feature, the Hypalon pulls that can loop together to add a bit of security on the zippers. This 65L waterproof duffel bag took that to another level. Remember that second side pocket outside? You can grab its zipper pull, tuck it inside, then through a little pass-through hole that goes to the main compartment. Once the Hypalon tab is inside, you can latch it onto the toggle by the corner. This minor anti-theft system is worth investing the time if you don’t want your belongings gone in a snap.

Sixty-five liters is a lot of weight to carry, especially if you have a small frame (lesson learned the hard way!). We know how hiking backpacks with the same capacity are equipped with a fantastic harness system to provide as much comfort as possible. We see this in Osprey with their Anti-Gravity.

We don’t recommend walking around with this massive Peak Design waterproof duffel bag for long periods. The harnessing is not for that specific purpose. You can opt for its sized-down version 35-liter or opt for the 30- or 45-liter travel backpack. A stowable telescopic handle and roller like in Olympia Luggage 8 Pocket would be a helpful addition to this monster hauler.

All in all, you can fit in your entire room (if not your entire house) in a 65L Travel Duffel. The high-quality construction and large capacity are match-made-in-heaven. Your stuff won’t clutter since there are many pockets for optimal organization.
