Hydration reservoirs are seldom one-size-fits all, particularly in the case of fast paced endurance sports. The Hydrapak Shape-Shift targets recreators who want to limit sloshing and extra volume for fast and light activities with the option for more volume in the event of a longer adventure. They achieve this by way of a sliding internal baffle (like an internal curtain) that “shapeshifts” the hydration reservoir and allows for a more streamlined fit in your pack.

Conceptually, this is a great idea but the execution and ease of use makes the Shape-Shift a bit more of a niche option than other top performers on this list. Namely the baffle is difficult to operate and is prone to sticking without semi-regular application of silicone lubricant. We’ve run into the same issue with the hose connection port.

Fortunately these are the only maintenance issues that we’ve encountered, otherwise the Shape-Shift is among the easiest models to clean that we’ve tested. It’s also relatively lightweight. Due to the issues operating the baffle, we can’t recommend the Shape-Shift to everyone but for lightweight enthusiasts who want the option for bigger carries it’s a sure winner.
