Effective Rain Pants
The Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants have very few features to mention. But they do the job, providing protection and a comfortable experience for the wearer.
Among them were the adjustable velcro straps at the leg bottoms, which tighten to prevent water infiltration into shoes or socks and the simple elastic and drawstring waistband to ensure a secure fit for different body shapes.
Although lacking in pockets, these waterproof pants have proved otherwise functional in terms of durability, waterproofing, and overall comfort.
Omni-Tech Protection
The Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants offer decent quality and comfort with a design that is simple and functional. We appreciated the fully sealed seams and noticed that they did a great job of keeping any and all moisture from penetrating, while also generally upping the quality feeling of the garment.
The excellent waterproofing comes at a bit of a price – these pants are admittedly not the most breathable option on the market and by quite some margin. Crafted with a waterproof and breathable two-layer construction, these pants will keep moisture out and in. Add the fact that they have no ventilation options, and these pants can get pretty hot pretty fast. We didn’t see this lack of breathability as a deal breaker but more something to keep in mind when shopping.
The Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants incorporate a layer of a Nylon Taffeta lining which adds an element of warmth, making these a pretty solid option for colder temperatures. This inner layer is quite comfortable, gentle on the skin, and a great option when you’re looking for something a little warmer.
Rain Pant Comfort
The simple drawstring and elastic waistband did the job of keeping our pants where we wanted them, and the overall fit was a bit baggier than many of the other pants we have tried out. This bagginess allows for layering and offers more mobility, but perhaps at the price of a bit more wind resistance.
The only complaint we have in terms of comfort is, again, the level of breathability. While these pants are great for snow wear, they can be uncomfortable in warmer, muggy environments. Columbia’s Omni-Tech material has an above-average permeability (breathability), focusing more on waterproofing.
With this in mind, these are a less ideal pair of pants for warmer climates.
Waterproof Pants for Roaming
In terms of performance, the Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants really shine in waterproof functionality and user convenience. The inclusion of adjustable velcro straps at the bottom of the pants, as well as the fully sealed seams, offer practical solutions to effectively prevent water from seeping into your bottom layer, shoes or socks and effectively shield you from the elements.
We found these waterproof pants to be decently durable, performing nearly as well as pants twice their price. Additionally, the pants offer a degree of convenience when inclement weather catches you off guard, with pant legs that are wide enough to step into while wearing shoes. This slightly roomier fit also offers enhanced mobility, making them suitable for active outdoor use.
While excelling in lightweight simplicity, weighing just 12.5 ounces, many custom reviews express they were left wanting a bit more. The pants don’t include pockets or ventilation openings – these simple additions would have made a world of difference in overall performance.
Price and Quality
Ringing in at $45 on Amazon, the Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants offer pretty awesome value for their price. In terms of comfort, quality and performance, we think these are some of the best waterproof pants in their price range. Of course, you can find a nicer pair of waterproof pants with all the bells and whistles, but certainly not at this price.
The Verdict on the Rebel Roamers
While there were a few things we were missing, for the reasonable sub $50 price, the Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants did not disappoint.
These pants offer high-performing waterproofing, packability, comfort, and phenomenal value – as far as we’re concerned, if they had pockets they’d be absolutely perfect. We would highly recommend the Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants for use in mild to cold weather

Frequently asked questions about Columbia Rebel Roamer Rain Pants for Men
Roamer pants, often referred to as “travel pants,” are designed to be versatile and comfortable for outdoor activities, travel, and everyday wear. This style of pants typically features lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking materials, multiple pockets for storage, and sometimes convertible zippers or buttons that can transform them into shorts for rapidly changing weather. Roamer pants are favored for their adaptability, making them suitable for various environments and terrains, from hiking to urban exploration.
Waterproof pants that are best for wet conditions generally have breathable yet water-resistant materials that keep you dry while allowing moisture to escape. Materials like Gore-Tex, eVent, or other high-quality waterproof fabrics are all suitable for waterproof gear. Features like taped seams, adjustable cuffs, reinforced knees, and zippered pockets can be helpful in preventing water from seeping in.
Wind pants and rain pants are not the same, although at times they serve overlapping purposes. Wind pants are designed to provide protection against chilly winds and offer a certain level of insulation, but they might not be completely waterproof. Wind pants can provide a light barrier against mist or drizzling rain, but they aren’t designed to keep you dry in moderate to heavy rain. Rain pants, or waterproof pants, on the other hand, are made from more water-resistant materials to prevent rain from penetrating the fabric – they are far more ideal for heavy rain or wet environments.
