The Top 6 Fanny Packs in 2025

All the Fanny Packs We've tested

High Quality & Practical Size
fjallraven-kanken-fanny-bag-logo-pocket

Our editor loves Fjallraven’s Kanken fanny pack for it’s size, the design and the quality. As of November 2024, and over two years, he has used this hip bag for camping, traveling and even as a medical kit pack.

The 3 zippered pockets–with the larger compartment big enough for a phone, passports and a powerbank–are ideal for traveling, commuting and running.

Beyond the comparison of design to other favorites we reviewed, this Fjallraven fanny pack has a quality that can’t really be beaten. There are a few that may be better on sustainability or for more volume, but this one is tops for a reason.

Nike. Shoes, apparel, and so much more. The Nike Heritage fanny pack fits into the portfolio of active gear quite well.

This black fanny pack is a very popular model because it’s got a 3-liter capacity, brand recognition and features for a functional, yet fashionable every day.

This hip bag that gets most often worn crossbody can be a great add-on to your Nike gear collection as well.

Good for Travel
waterfly-fanny-pack-product-image.jpg

There’s a belief that price is an absolute indicator of quality. What to do if you can’t afford famous belt bag brands? Waterfly Fanny Pack is a convincing alternative.

One of the best and most affordable you’ll find today. At under $15, Waterfly Fanny Pack serves you with features you won’t find in the cheapest waist bag of any well-known brand.

Headphone hole, key clip, and mesh back padding. And that’s just a few of what you can expect.

It can carry more than your phone and wallet as well. The size of this belt bag makes it a very passable sling bag too.

But can Waterfly Fanny Pack, an Amazon best seller, disprove that “budget-friendly is low quality”?

herschel-fourteen-waist-pack-product-image.jpg

We had to test the Herschel fanny pack. The diminutive size belies its very intentional aesthetic. We were more interested in the quality of Herschel’s Fourteen measured against other belt bags.

Its simple design offers enough space to fit items too bulky or numerous for your pocket. But its low profile and design make it subtle too.

As a belt bag, it can be concealed under a sweater. As a crossbody bag, the strap makes it a comfortable piece.

The color options are pretty decent. The Fourteen is also pretty sharp fanny pack in black.

  • Dimension: 5.5 x 8 x 2.5 inches

Why Trust Us

We were 5 testers that used our community of hikers, walkers, teenagers, party-goers, campers and professionals to get a wide range of opinions and experience to get to the best products. The Team has years of experience testing all types of packs and leverages that authority to bring an unbiased assessment of what it’s like to use each product reviewed here.

Fanny Packs Compared Price Size

How We Test

We started with 20 products that we chose based on positive reviews online, brand currency and from best-sellers on Amazon.

Additionally, we looked at search data that revealed further what demand for these belt bags was indicating. We added to the original group of products as we got our hands on additional fanny packs.

From the 20 products, four testers carried out testing over more than two years. To pass our tests and make into our reviews each bag had to be worn for two weeks by one tester than switched over to another the next person. When a tester finished their fortnight of experience they noted down the following: durability, usability, top features, comfort, style and approval (whether a design achieved creating an overall experience commensurate to its intent).

In many cases, but not all, these products have been flown, cycled, partied and rained on.

group-of-fanny-packs-lying-on-the-table

While fanny pack manufacturers aren’t necessarily out there actively trying to rip you off, if you just go and buy a fanny pack without doing the proper research, chances are, you’ll end up getting a fanny pack that doesn’t suit your needs.

What it really all boils down to is this: what is the right fanny pack for you? Do you want a fashionable, designer fanny pack? Or do you want something tough that’s suitable for the most unforgiving of outdoor adventures? Or do you want something that just does what it’s supposed to?

Regardless of your answers to the questions above, there are some key factors you have to consider. We’ve listed  down these key factors below.

Design and Dimensions

Like all other accessories, fanny packs are available in various shapes and sizes. While there’s no hard and fast rule, certain shapes and designs can cater more to women, while others are more suited for men.

Obviously, different sizes will also suit different body types. You need something that’ll carry your essentials, without being too bulky or too small.

If you get something that’s a size too big or too small, this can significantly affect mobility and comfort—and you’ll definitely look like you ordered the wrong size.

Different Fanny Packs Worn On Two Individuals

There is also a question of finding the best fanny pack brand. That implies a company profile with all its characteristics. While a Lululemon fanny pack might carry prestige, it’s not going to carry your items any better in our experience. A Patagonia Black Hole Mini compared to a Herschel fanny pack will be a more relevant set of candidates. Throw in Champion and Nike and you have brands that are doing things uniquely, even if they end in a similar result.

One of our favorites that demonstrates both sustainability, style and practical use in a durable format is Fjallraven’s Kanken. Same size as the black JanSport, with similar zips as Patagonia, but a more robust material.

Fjallraven's Kanken fanny pack is a sustainable option that has received acclaim for its style too.
Fjallraven's Kanken fanny pack is a sustainable option that has received acclaim for its style too.
The Champion Signal is a smaller hip pack with two compartments of equal size. Good for organization, but not able to hold bigger, bulkier items.

Size also determines a fanny pack’s utility. If you just need something to hold your phone and keys at a concert or on your daily jog, a more compact fanny pack would be ideal. Conversely, a bigger fanny pack is ideal if you need something to hold your essentials for extended outdoor adventures.

Another thing to consider is the length of the hip pack’s strap, as straps are only adjustable to a certain extent, and some straps just aren’t meant for certain body types. While this is easily fixed by buying a replacement strap, no one wants that kind of hassle.

Last but not least, you have to consider the colors that your belt bag of choice can come in. If your fanny pack doesn’t match your personal style, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb, and people will look at you like you’re some kind of savage (unless that’s your goal; in which case, go right ahead).

Comfort

This is probably a no-brainer, and you’ve probably heard this more than once, but it bears repeating. Comfort is paramount when choosing a fanny pack. You’re going to wear it for long periods of time. Depending on your body type, some fanny packs can be more comfortable for you than other fanny packs.

Comfort goes hand in hand with a fanny pack’s design and dimensions, as well as the material it’s made out of.

Even if you have one of the plushest fanny packs on the market, you’re going to end up returning it if you’re allergic to the material it’s made out of.

Conversely, even if your skin loves the fanny pack, if it’s too big or too bulky, it’ll most definitely ruin an otherwise perfectly enjoyable outdoor trip. What’s the point of getting a fanny pack if you can’t move freely with it?

Material

Fanny packs are made out of a wide variety of materials—from nylon, to polyester, to canvas, to leather/faux leather, or a combination of these.

The material used in manufacturing the fanny pack, as well as how you intend on using your fanny pack, will determine how long it lasts.

Ideally, you’d want your fanny pack to last you more than you’d care to use it. You’re storing your essentials in it, so if it’s prone to tears and punctures, you might as well consider your valuables as good as gone.

nike-heritage-front-view

The Nike Fanny Pack called Heritage is a great example of plenty of compartments, and good security in a reasonably sized hip pouch that wears very nicely as a crossbody bag.

The type of material used in making the fanny pack will also affect how comfortable it is.

Some people might be allergic to certain materials, or some materials might be too heavy, or some materials might make an annoying sound as you move.

The kind of material used can also determine its stylishness, and will also determine if it’s washable or not.

Compartments and Security Features

Multiple compartments are kind of the whole point of fanny packs. Sure, you can use them in a variety of different situations, but at the end of the day, fanny packs are defined by the hassle-free storage that they offer.

While the number and size of compartments may vary, most fanny packs have multiple compartments to store all your essentials conveniently.

That said, as convenient as having multiple compartments is, one of the major concerns of both long-time and would-be-wearers is how secure the fanny pack is.

You can’t put your valuables in a small bag (that, if worn properly and with the right fit, you’ll most likely forget you’re wearing) and not worry about said valuables getting stolen.

If you intend on regularly using a fanny pack, especially during your travels, it’s important to check for security features such as RFID protection, ripstop fabric, and premium zippers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you wear a fanny pack?

The conventional way of wearing a fanny pack is around your waist. That said, there’s no hard and fast rule, and you can wear a fanny pack across your shoulders as a cross body purse; you can even tighten the straps and wear it like a purse/shoulder bag. That said, for better security, it’s ideal to wear your fanny pack in the front.

Why are fanny packs back?

Personally, I think fanny packs never left. That said, the reasons for fanny packs’ resurgence in popularity are the same reasons they became “in” the first time around: their affordability (obviously, there are luxury options, but usually they’re really cheap) and convenience. Also, as opposed to backpacks and heavier sling bags, fanny packs don’t take their toll on your spine.

How do I choose a fanny pack?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a fanny pack. Generally, you want something that will accommodate your body type and lifestyle. If you want to get down to the nitty-gritty of choosing a fanny pack, check out this buying guide.
