Shredding Capability & Ideal Wave Size

[videopress 68SytAdF autoplay="true" loop="true" muted="true" controls="false" playsinline="true"]

The EPS core featured on the Storm bodyboard is buoyant and maximizes stability. The 60/40 rails and bottom rear channels provide maneuverability and responsiveness you can feel. And the crescent tail shreds in all-size surf. So, the shred capability of this board is high, and any level rider will benefit from its performance design.

The Storm bodyboard is a fantastic choice if wave conditions are in the small to medium range (1-5ft). However, waves over 8ft will not be handled as well due to the boogie board’s EPS core and HDPE slick. If you’re serious about bodyboarding, having this EPS core bodyboard in your quiver will guarantee you have fun on those smaller swell days.

Who Should Ride this Board

bps-storm-body-board-big-wave
A beginner bodyboarder catching a wave with almost zero effort due to the EPS core

Due to the buoyant EPS core, anyone can hop on this board and have fun, especially on a 2-3ft day. However, more advanced riders can notice this board is not the fastest on the market. The ideal candidate is a beginner or intermediate bodyboarder. Once you advance to tub riding and house-sized surf, you should get a board made with more durable materials. But this board can get you to that level.

If you are an advanced/expert rider, there is still lots of fun to be had on this board, especially in the surf under 3ft. So, if you want extra volume on small summer surf days, the Storm bodyboard will perform great.

This board comes in three sizes and several color options, making it a great boogie board choice for families. The smallest size, 33”, is perfect for kids. The 37” is great for teenagers or smaller-framed adults. The 41” can hold an adult up to 210 lbs. So order a few for your family, and y’all can match on the beach.

Affordable, Lightweight Bodyboard Materials

The Storm bodyboard is designed to be a budget-friendly, quality boogie board that will last. This BPS board comes with a 12-month warranty. If the company’s warranty does not reassure you that this board is made with good stuff, then we will.

The EPS core Storm boogie board’s side profile

The core is made of expanded polystyrene (EPS). This is the best entry bodyboard core. However, the EPS core’s flexibility and longevity are not as guaranteed as the other bodyboard cores, polypropylene and polyethylene.

The EPS core is the most affordable bodyboard core. A beginner or intermediate rider will be more than pleased to use the EPS core as its buoyancy will catch many waves. It is also a relatively durable material that can last for many years; the most common way to snap an EPS board is in heavy surf conditions or poor transportation.

The BPS Storm bodyboard has a high-quality cross-linked Polyethylene (XPE) deck. This is the most durable deck on the market. It is full of flex and is ready to tackle 6ft waves. The Storm bodyboard’s deck is an upgrade from its price-point competitors.

The BPS Storm bodyboard is light enough to hold with one hand but full of durability and flexibility

When riding this board, the deck feels high-quality and performs well. It is a resilient, light-weight deck. However, this deck can be prone to wrinkling or bubbling. It is important to store this deck out of the sun and rinse it off with fresh water after surfing to avoid wrinkles and bubbles.

The reliable high-density polyethylene (HDPE) slick brings high speed to your boogie board experience. HDPE is the industry standard bodyboard slick. It is stiff, performative, and affordable. The alternative slick is made with Surlyn, a more durable and expensive option.

The HDPE slick featured on the BPS Storm boogie board makes it fast and durable

The HDPE slick fits perfectly on the BPS Storm due to the accompanying EPS core. The EPS core and HDPE slick make this board a perfect entry board due to its price and floatable material designed to catch numerous waves.

Performing Board Design

Featuring 60/40 rails, bottom rear channels, a crescent tail, and a slight nose rocker, collectively making a sound boogie board performance

The Storm bodyboard’s design supplements its EPS core. The rails, tail shape, and channels elevate this board’s performance and wave-catching abilities. BPS turns a simple EPS core boogie board into a carving machine. This performing board design will make 3-4ft surf into a bodyboard competition.

Keeping with bodyboard tradition, this board is shaped with a crescent tail. The crescent tail shape is ideal for all wave sizes. It is a comfortable tail shape, especially while riding lying down, due to it hugging your torso.

The clipped crescent tail featured on the BPS Storm boogie board

The BPS Storm has a clipped crescent tail shape that performs well while riding the wave. The Storm’s crescent tail provides grip you can feel when riding down the line or in the barrel. This Storm bodyboard has a slight rocker nose, ensuring riders avoid nose dives. This is a great design choice that will maximize the fun had by beginner/intermediate riders. Even advanced riders prefer some nose rocker. We are glad that this has been added to the BPS bodyboard.

The 60/40 rails on the Storm offer a sweet mixture of stability and maneuverability. Easy to hold onto, the rider can feel secure while riding down the line. However, the stability does not compromise the bodyboard’s responsiveness.

Bps Storm Body Board Rear Channels
Here, you can see the bottom rear channels near the board's tail. The channels perform tremendously and turn the Storm into a nimble turning machine

While riding, the playfulness of the rails can be observed. The 60/40 rails are the best-suited for this board material and enhance its performance. Bottom rear channels elevate this board’s design past the typical EPS/HDPE bodyboard. Channels work to redirect water from the board in order to turn the board.

The better the channels, the more controlled turns you can make in the pocket. Due to the bottom rear channel additions, the turning capability skyrockets on the BPS Storm.

Quality Evaluation

Bps Storm Body Board Quality Evaluation

Produced by a water-knowledgable Kiwi family down under, the quality of this board is solid. If the quality is lacking, the customer communication is speedy and reliable. The one-year warranty covers manufacturing defects like bubbling or shipping dents.

The top customer complaints are the top deck bubbling/warping or shipping damage; however, these happen few and far between. Overall, the quality is satisfactory. The XPE deck, EPS core, and HDPE slick will last a few years if not more.

To ensure the Storm bodyboard quality stays for years, leave the white slick facing up at the beach (keep the top deck out of the sun) and rinse the boogie board off with fresh water after beach adventures!

Good Value for the Price

The BPS Storm Bodyboard is a good value for the price. When comparing this board to other EPS core bodyboards, it stacks up well for price. The bodyboard’s performance design elevates this board’s value above its EPS core bodyboard competitors. The high-quality leash included in the purchase also brings more value for the price.

The small business that produces these bodyboards wants to bring the best value to its customers. Barrel Point Surf loves watersports and wants to share their love with the world. They do this by producing quality products that are affordable for other families to buy.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are lighter boogie boards better?

Lighter boogie boards are not necessarily better or worse. The weight of a bodyboard depends upon the materials it is made with. The most lightweight core material is expanded polystyrene (EPS). EPS is also the cheapest and least performative. PE is the standard bodyboard core and is the heaviest. PP core is lighter than PE and is the chosen pro-bodyboarder core material.

Board design does not necessarily change the board’s weight, but additional features like stringers will increase the board’s weight and stiffness. The tail shape, channels, and rails will not influence weight but can significantly improve board performance. In conclusion, the weight of the bodyboard is not the determinant of the board’s performance.

Do you need a leash to ride a boogie board?

Bodyboards do not need to be ridden with a leash. However, it is most common to wear a leash, especially at the amateur level. Beginner and intermediate boogie boards usually come with a leash plug and leash.

Advanced bodyboards often do not come with a pre-installed leash plug and leash. They are built this way to give the rider a preference for a leash plug. It is relatively easy to install a leash plug if that is what you want. Suppose you see an advanced bodyboard riding without a leash. In that case, it is usually because they are practicing board spins in aerials, surfing in waves too big to matter if there is a leash or not, or because of personal preference. We advise all novice riders to use a leash.

How to wear a boogie board leash?

Boogie board leashes can be worn on the wrist or bicep. It is essential to secure the leash to the leash plug; you can do this by threading the leash through the loop on the leash plug. Ensure the velcro cuff is tight enough not to slip off but loose enough not to cut off the circulation. Most bodyboard leashes are designed to be worn on the wrist but can be moved to the bicep if the cuff fits. However, some leashes are advertised with a bicep cuff.
