What’s Special About this Resort
Located on the slightly more remote Hawaiian island of Lanai, the Sensei Resort is one of the most secluded and restorative resorts on our list. Owned by Four Seasons, this resort upholds the utmost quality standards of the hotel group.
Everything at Sensei is designed to enhance wellness. From the sculpture gardens that promote relaxation and creativity, to the nutritional food menu, to the many spa services they offer targeted at wellness and renewal. This resort is the perfect destination if you are in need of a reset or an inspiring creative retreat.
The Sensei Four Seasons is not all-inclusive. The resort does offer packages. The base package includes your stay, a daily credit that can be applied to the spa, wellness treatments, and most island activities. The nightly fee also includes semi-private roundtrip air transportation from Honolulu, as well as transportation to and from the main four seasons resort and the beach.
What To Do
The grounds at Sensei are typically the first thing mentioned in guest reviews. The sculpture gardens at Sensei are breathtaking, with towering art displays surrounded by lush Hawaiian foliage. This garden features work from renowned artists all over the world.
You can’t do a Hawaiian vacation without spending some time in the sand, and thankfully the island of Lanai has 18 miles of beach for guests to enjoy. While you’re close to the water, you can try out snorkeling or splurge on a sunset sailing expedition.
Sensei has many of the typical resort offerings like golf and tennis, though you may have to take a shuttle to the main Four Seasons resort to enjoy some of these perks.
The menu of massage treatments is extensive. They offer all the usual options like hot stone or couples massages, in addition to some really unique treatments. One that stood out to us was the “four hands massage,” where two masseuses work in tandem. The spa offers many treatments that have been adapted from Hawaiian tradition, like the “Lomi Lomi” treatment that incorporates massage, breathwork and aromatherapy, or the variety of body-walking treatments available.
The spa at Sensei is the main attraction which offers a wide menu of indulgent treatments designed to relax and heal – and they spared no luxury. Each treatment you book comes with a complimentary 30 minute session in your own private “hale,” (meaning house), where you have access to an infrared sauna, a steam room, an outdoor shower, and a soak tub. You can rent this hale out for longer periods at an additional fee.
The spa at Sensei offers enough services that you could easily spend a week pampering yourself and enjoying the perks of your own personal hale. Standard messages, facials, and other Hawaiian inspired spa services are available on their menu. They have many luxurious experiences to keep you zenned-out at the spa for days on end, but we highly recommend checking out their full spa menu as there is far too much to list here.
We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this resort to thrill-seekers, but for those looking for an adrenaline spike to break up your stay, Sensei offers horseback riding, “adventure park” zip lining and obstacle courses, shooting and archery, and even electric motorbiking.
What To Eat and Drink
Sensei by Nobu is the one and only restaurant located on the property, but the menu is large and broad enough to keep things interesting for the duration of your stay. The ever changing menu serves only the freshest, in-season ingredients that aim to provide maximum health benefits. The menu at Nobu is curated for wellness, much like everything else at Sensei. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sensei by Nobu incorporates their nutritional expertise into classic Japanese and Hawaiian inspired cuisines.
Free transport is provided to the main Four Seasons Lanai resort for other a la carte dining options.
If you have the means to leave the resort grounds, just down the street is the Blue Ginger Cafe. This casual spot is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, serving popular dishes with a bit of an islander twist.
A short walk across Dole Park from the Blue Ginger Cafe is Richards Market, a small grocery that offers grab-n-go food – a perfect place to grab a coffee and load up on small bites and snacks for your stay.
