Ready to discover the most beautiful places in the Bahamas?
Many of our editors and writers at Outoria have gone and experienced everything that the Bahamas have to offer. So, I asked for their take on what the most beautiful places are and what they’d recommend for someone heading over there.
I got some beautiful recommendations for you from those that have actually lived it (unfortunately I’m not one of the lucky few). You’ll also find recommendations for beautiful accommodations and of course I had to throw in a few diving spots for you since that’s what we’re all about.
So here are our 15 top most beautiful places in the Bahamas to visit on your next trip there.
15 Most Beautiful Places in the Bahamas
These are the most beautiful places in the Bahamas according to our writers and editors. Make sure to add them to your list of places to visit.
New Providence
New Providence stands out as one of the top islands in The Bahamas – it’s often the first spot for many folks coming to this cluster of islands. This is where Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas is located. Nassau is lively and buzzing, boasting a wide array of resort casinos, fancy eateries, and quirky museums. One thing you’ve got to check off your list is climbing the historic Queen’s Staircase, built in the 18th century, all the way up to Fort Fincastle. From there, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views from the highest point on the island.
Hop aboard one of the many glass-bottom boats from Nassau’s harbor, whisk you away to the natural reefs scattered throughout the archipelago. And when it comes to sandy shores, New Providence doesn’t disappoint. You’ve got gems like Cable Beach, Caves Beach, and Delaporte Beach, all offering stretches of golden sands just waiting for you to kick back and relax.
Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park
No itinerary of the most beautiful places in the Bahamas is complete without Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park on the list — a marine sanctuary. It’s not just your run-of-the-mill marine area. Established in 1958, it was the world’s first land and sea park and covers an area of 176 square miles.
Expect that you’ll be surrounded by the most breathtaking seascapes you’ve ever laid eyes on. And the best part? It’s not just for sightseeing. It’s an adventure playground for water sports enthusiasts. There’s no shortage of water sport activities waiting for you in these crystal-clear waters, including snorkeling, diving and kayaking. Just make sure you follow the park rules.
But the marine life here is the real magic. The area is a strict no-take zone (all fishing is prohibited) which means that the coral and all marine life can flourish in peace. There’s good reason that it is home to the Western Hemisphere’s second largest coral barrier reef. Although the park is mostly blue waters, the land too is an important refuge for a small mammal called the hutia, several rare iguana species and marine birds. If you’re an animal lover, like myself, you can join one of the professional guides to feed the endangered Bahamian iguanas or to catch a glimpse of the hutia.
Paradise Island
Paradise Island can best be described as a playground for adults. It’s the ultimate high-end island vacation spot.
Paradise Island is a small island (approx. 1.1 square miles) and one of the nearest stops if you’re visiting New Providence. Thanks to the footbridges linking Nassau to this tropical escape. Here, you’ll find Atlantis, a beautiful resort boasting an oceanfront retreat, a lively 24-hour casino and an aquarium. Golf enthusiasts can tee off at the private 18-hole golf course, while the marina has a picturesque spot for yacht lovers. Aquaventure is a part of the resort where families flock to enjoy the waterpark with various lagoons, pools, water slides, and rides.
Paradise Island stands out as one of the most luxurious destinations in the country. Stroll through the upscale Crystal Court Shops for jewelry and designer boutiques, or explore Marina Village for diverse crafts and dining options. You’ll also find more of the island’s charming attractions, such as the Versailles Gardens and French Cloister, the pristine Cabbage Beach, and Cove Beach.
Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre
If you’re all about nature’s beauty, this spot is calling your name. Forget your typical zoo — this place is a sanctuary, a haven where you can genuinely connect with Bahamian wildlife and vibrant botanical gardens.
What started in the late 50’s as a breeding program to prevent the extinction of the Caribbean Flamingo, the National Bird of the Bahamas, has now become an animal rescue and rehab center. The area covers over four acres of lush tropical gardens and is inhabited by a variety of animal species, 75% of which are wildlife rescues in rehab.
You’ll find this hidden gem in the heart of Nassau here. Open 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with affordable entrance rates.
A top choice for nature lovers looking to uncover the most beautiful places in the Bahamas.
Villa Doyle
Villa Doyle is the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, and the main building on the gallery’s grounds.
If you’re looking for a cultural gem in the Bahamas, you should head over to Villa Doyle — a magnificent Neoclassical mansion lovingly restored to its former glory. Take a journey through time as you learn about the fascinating history of this place.
Originally erected in the 1860s by William Henry Doyle, the esteemed Chief Justice of the Bahamas, it’s steeped in heritage and creativity. Admission to the museum gives you access to Villa Doyle (main building), NAGB Art Park (also the site of the first African hospital in Nassau), Fiona’s Theatre (open-air amphitheater) and the Mixed Media Museum Store.
Sitting at the intersection of West and West Hill Street in Nassau, this gallery welcomes you from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Saturday. Visit the official site for opening hours and visitor information.
Elbow Cay
If you’re searching for small islands in the Bahamas, Elbow Cay is something for you. It’s a place where you won’t find cars, tourists are few in numbers, people go around in golf carts and locals will ask you “how did you find us?”
You’ll see quaint shaded houses dotting the roads of Hope Town, reminiscent of a bygone era when life moved at a slower pace. Drop by the Elbow Reef Lighthouse during the night near Hope Town Harbour. This iconic tower is the only lighthouse in the world still running in kerosine. You can also ask the operators if you can participate in some of their duties. If you decide to come during daytime, climbing to the top will give a scenic view of the island from a different POV.
Once you set foot on Elbow Cay’s palm-lined beaches, you’ll understand why visitors love it here. Just a few steps from Hope Town, you’ll find an almost-empty white sand beach. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the entire shore all to yourself. There’s also the sandbar called Tahiti Beach. It offers a unique experience of enjoying your cocktail from a floating bar while chillin’ in the water.
Want to meet and vibe with the locals? Then join the fun at Cap’n Jacks Monday bingo nights and the Saturday morning farmers market. You can easily stay healthy and happy during your getaway.
While on the island, remember to grab some drinks from On Da Beach Bar & Grill. Although it requires some effort to cover the mile-long trek to get there from downtown, you’ll be glad that you did. The music, the drinks, the people and the view of the Atlantic waters, the overall ambiance here screams tropical paradise.
Downtown and Bay Street
Looking to indulge in some serious retail therapy? Welcome to Downtown and Bay Street in Nassau, Bahamas—a vibrant hub bursting with shops, dining options, and lively street vendors. It’s the ultimate destination for duty-free shopping, where you can score some seriously cool finds.
Located on New Providence Island, Nassau, Downtown, and Bay Street welcome shoppers all day long, ensuring you can shop ’til you drop at your own pace. Get the ultimate travel souvenir from the popular Straw Market.
You’ll have plenty of options from local vendors selling artisanal items (grab yourself a straw bag, trust me, it’s a little piece that will add flavor to your OOTDs!). History buffs can join a walking tour that covers Bay Street and its historical buildings like the Nassau Public Library and Pompey Museum.
Now, walking around, shopping and immersing yourself in these activities can easily starve you. Reward yourself with some authentic Bahamian cuisines at The Fish Fry. Nothing beats ending the day with a delicious serving of fresh seafood and ice-cold beer!
Grand Bahama
Grand Bahama is the northernmost of the islands of the Bahamas and the third largest island. It’s known for its beaches, reef-lined coves and mangrove swamps, as well as its all-inclusive resorts and golf courses. So, whether you’re balling on a budget or cruising in luxury, it’s a must-visit.
Picture-perfect beaches are just the beginning. Mind you, they’re not just sandy stretches. They’re vibrant hubs where locals and travelers mingle, creating this cool fusion vibe. You can choose from popular Taino Beach, or head towards Churchill Beach and Fortune Beach. If you enjoy all the crazies of a beach holiday, Lucaya Beach has all the activities for you (of, it’s a well crowded shore). Want to go bar hopping? Islands Seas Beach and its beach bars are your best bet. And if you’re searching for something off the beaten path, Xanadu Beach is the place.
Want to try beachside shopping? Grand Bahama’s got you covered. Think of unique beach jewelry and handcrafted straw goods that scream ‘take me home.’ And when hunger strikes (because, let’s be real, salty air makes you hungry), hit up one of the island’s many eateries. Sip on something refreshing, savor a tasty meal, and soak in the island vibes. Best part? No reservations required, just good vibes.
On the other hand, nature lovers must head to the West End and visit the Garden of the Groves. This 5-hectare oasis is a cradle to over ten thousand species of floras. Just follow the trail and it will take you on a nature trip to a lagoon. There’s also a waterfall and an old chapel sitting on top of a hill. Want a bit of fun, get lost in the labyrinth made with limestones.
If you’re traveling with kids, Garden of the Groves also hosts endemic birds. Your little ones will also love the butterfly garden and the raccoon shelter. You’ll reach the Garden of the Groves east of Freeport via a minibus or cab. Alternatively, rent a scooter or a car so you can wander around the island at your own pace.
The Lucayan National Park is another treasured natural gem in Grand Bahama. Covering 16 hectares, the underwater cave system here is the world’s longest. You can try the short and easy journey such as the one in Burial Mound Cave. Other than the usual bats, it’s also the home to the remains of Grand Bahama’s ancestors, the Lucayans.
Remember to pack a picnic and trace the mangrove trail leading to Gold Rock Beach. It’s beautiful and crowd-free. Although, you might want to stay alert of the racoons waiting around, looking for the perfect timing to steal your sandwich.
You can save a few bucks while in Grand Bahama if you join the free tour of the 3-story Perfume Factory. You’ll learn about the whole process and if you’re up for it, you can create your own scent for a small fee.
Harbour Island
Harbour Island—a tiny paradise nestled in the Bahamas, home to just about 2,000 friendly faces. Here, Dunmore Town steals the spotlight, a charming oasis where British colonial-style buildings cozy up to pastel cottages, top-notch restaurants, and vibrant bougainvillea blooms at every turn.
But let’s talk about the real showstopper: the 3-mile Pink Sands Beach. Imagine stretches of soft, rose-colored sand lining the island’s eastern coast, a mesmerizing sight thanks to a magical mix of foraminifera, coral, shells, and more. Trust me, it’s a scene straight out of a dream.
Feeling the urge for adventure? Dive into the clear blue waters and set sail for Devil’s Backbone— a coral reef teeming with life. Keep your eyes peeled for graceful turtles and majestic stingrays as you explore the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s an underwater wonderland you won’t want to miss.
No trip to Harbour Island is complete without some conch on your dinner. Dine at Blue Bar for yummy island delicacies. You can’t skip having a glass of the island’s signature Goombay Smash! This drink can easily make you order another glass. The romantic candle-lit ambiance at Blue Bar also makes for a great dinner date. On the other hand, the freshly-baked goodies at Arthur’s Bakery for an energizing morning breakfast.
Andros Island
Andros – the big cheese of the Bahamas – is the largest of the Bahamian Islands. Rich in culture and social hotspots.
For all you underwater explorers, Andros is your dream destination. You can explore the Andros Barrier Reef. It’s like diving into another world, where vibrant marine life dances around you in a kaleidoscope of colors. And since it’s the world’s third biggest reef, you’re sure to find plenty of surprises.
Now, there’s another gem hidden at the 40,000-acre Blue Holes National Park. The mesmerizing blue holes sitting amidst pine forests is one for the films. These 22 holes are connected by an underwater cave system. The park also keeps the rare Great Lizard Cuckoo safe within its boundaries. If you plan to add camping on your trip, this is an excellent spot to pitch a tent for at least a night. You can go hiking, swimming, enjoy some BBQs and lay under the stars.
It doesn’t end there. Andros is a treasure trove for nature and adventure lovers. The West Side National Park covers 1.5 million acres of the island and serves as home to West Indian Flamingos. Hikers can also choose various trails suitable for different skill levels.
How about a lighthouse armed to the teeth with guns and cannons? Well, you’ll find it all here. It’s not just a beam of light in the night. It’s a must-see historical piece from 1892 for anyone who visits the Bahamas. The remains at Native Colony Ruins are also a treat for history buffs. And on the northeastern section of Andros, you’ll find Henry Morgan’s Cave. According to stories, there’s a hidden treasure inside since it was apparently the safehouse to the region’s infamous pirate, Sir Henry Morgan.
Cat Island
No, Cat Island isn’t populated by those 4-legged fur babies. It’s named after the iconic pirate Arthur Catt. While many flock here to unwind and unplug, there’s a world of adventure waiting to be explored on this 150-square-mile slice of this fish hook-shaped paradise.
For those with an adventurous spirit, lace up your hiking boots and conquer the stone staircase leading to the summit of Mount Alvernia, standing tall at 206 feet above sea level. This heigh deems it to be the highest in the country. The breathtaking views from the top will make every step worth it. Besides, it will only take a 10 to 15 minutes of hike to reach the summit. Other than the view, you’ll also find a monastery known as The Hermitage. In total, Cat Island caters to roughly fifty miles of trails.
But that’s just the beginning. Cat Island is home to some of the most intriguing natural wonders, including Boiling Hole, Mermaid Hole, and Big Blue Hole— rumored abodes of mythical sea creatures that will ignite your imagination. More historical sights like the plantation ruins and slave houses are still visible to this day.
For water enthusiasts, dive into the crystal-clear depths surrounding Cat Island on thrilling diving excursions. Explore the underwater wonders and discover the eerie beauty of Santa Maria Teresa, a Spanish battleship that met its fate beneath the waves in 1898. It’s a journey into history and adventure you won’t soon forget.
Cat Island is not as developed as the other islands on our list. The beaches are untouched and most of the time, you’ll find little to no crowd at all. On the other hand, you’ll need a bit of patience to get to places since the asphalt roads are in terrible condition. But when it comes to its natural beauty, custom and history, Cat Island is one of the most beautiful places in the Bahamas.
Long Island
Tucked away in the southern reaches of the Bahamian Archipelago lies a hidden gem worth every detour. With its sprawling stretches of pristine coastline, Long Island lives up to its fame. It offers visitors a taste of Bahamian beauty like no other.
This island spans 80 miles long and is home to only around 5,000 people. You’ll find everything you need for a tropical getaway, from sun-kissed shores to an array of thrilling water sports. It’s sure to wow even the most seasoned travelers. So, why not add it to your list of the most beautiful places in the Bahamas?
Try your luck bonefishing, visit hidden coves and cays, or go hike the trails. You can also go diving with stingrays, dolphins, and sharks. Hop on a kayak and encounter turtles or get your hand on a SUP or skimboard to catch some waves.
Long Island is also home to the world’s second deepest blue hole at 662 feet, the Dean’s Blue Hole. Diving here is a must if you want an out-of-this-world experience. Freedivers also flock here for extra thrill and the surreal beauty.
Beach hopping is also a must. Watermelon Beach is the most popular (and crowded) while Lochabar Bay Beach is for anyone who wants some solitude. There’s literally plenty of beaches you can choose from including Love Beach and its pink sandy shore, Salt Pond Beach, Cabbage Point Beach, Newton Cay Beach and Stella Maris Beach. You have all the beautiful spots and sunshine you need to spread a mat and get a perfect tan.
Want to go underground? Set aside some time for Hamilton’s Cave. Inside, you’ll see stalagmites and stalactites, a spring and numerous bat species. Just remember that you need to take a quick hike before you can reach the cave entrance. You can opt to explore on your own or have a guide for a small fee.
Pair your visit with a trip to the Long Island Museum. Some of the exhibits include old age goose irons, lamps, and tureens. You’ll also see cottages and gothic churches that once served the people of the area. You’ll find the updated schedule and fees here.
When it’s time to refuel your calories, we recommend Max’s Conch Bar for a unique take on conch salad. Their pepper steak and fried shrimp are also a must-taste. If you want delicious options you can take on-the-go, the sandwiches at Lighthouse Point Restaurant will satiate your hunger and bless your taste buds.
