The Rains Trail Gym Bag 27L is a stylish waterproof gym bag that can double as a weekender bag. This training duffel is high on fashion and water protection but slightly low on features compared to other gym bags.
We tested and confirmed this bag’s waterproofing protection on the outside, including the small, seamed zip pocket in the front.
This bag looks good and matches a sophisticated appearance. In this way, it makes a stunning weekender too. As good as it is looking, it’s not ideal for intense training though.

A CONVENIENT UNISEX GYM AND WEEKENDER BAG
We like that this bag can be used as a gym bag and a weekender bag and its price is reasonable for its double function. The Rains signature guarantees its durability and it is made with an environmentally conscious mindset.
Its main compartment is more than big enough for a pair of shoes, a towel and other gym essentials and is big enough for a typical overnight worth of clothes. For specific sporting activities, we used packing cubes to make up for the lack of organizational pockets.
It does well in wet weather, easily resisting insistent rain and can be dried off quickly. The matte polyurethane coating will absorb smudges when in contact with greasy substances like body lotion, hand cream or sunscreen. That’s something to keep in mind.
Overall, an easy-to-use, single-compartment functional bag without many pockets. It will do the trick and is easy to carry and incorporate into everyday wardrobe.
MATERIAL, CAPACITY AND SPECIAL FEATURES
The Trail Gym Bag is made with the signature Rains matte polyurethane coating and strong lasting material. It has a large main compartment and its boxed shape makes it easy to pack.
It does not have internal pockets or dividers, but it features a small zipped pocket in the front for essentials. All zippers have the Rains longer grips for easy grasping. The zippers are coated for better protection from precipitation.
The shoulder strap is detachable and adjustable. The carry straps have a handle wrap with snap clasps which are easy to open and close quickly.
WATERPROOFING
It features a promising W3 – Waterproof protection from light rain and its material is very easy to wipe dry or air dry. When placed on a wet surface like a bench or the sidewalk, it holds its ground well.
We dropped it in a puddle and exposed it to the shower test with extreme prejudice. The contents remained perfectly dry. We would certainly not submerge it in water as it is not designed for such use, but biking or walking in the rain without an umbrella will cause you no grief.
PRICE/QUALITY RATIO
It may be towards the higher end of the category price range but it’s a stylish bag made with quality materials that are waterproof. Plus, it functions as a gym and weekender bag.
The Rains brand is well known for making durable, long-lasting and contemporary bags that can keep up with heavy-duty everyday use. If you are in the market for a bag to use in other places than the gym, it is a great investment.
COMPARING WATERPROOF GYM BAGS
We love gym bags, especially ones that can double as weekender bags or travel duffels.
We compared the Trail Gym Bag to the VOORAY Burner Compact Gym Bag which is an affordable slightly smaller option, comes in an array of colors and features more pockets and internal dividers. It is also made out of recycled plastic bottles with the environment in focus.
Another choice we found matching it was the Thule Chasm Duffel. It is much larger in the 40 liter size, which makes it also useful as a travel duffel rather than a more streamlined urban bag you just take to yoga.
DO WE RECOMMEND IT?
We got to use the Trail Gym Bag for various activities and liked it. It doubles well as a gym bag and holds enough for weekend trips.
We put it to the test in the rain and it kept its content dry and well protected. Equally, we put wet content in it and didn’t seep out either. It is a good choice for swimming or hot yoga that involves carrying wet clothes back and forth and it dries quickly.
We think that its price is reasonable for a stylish bag that functions without any discernible reason for complaint. Compared to the more garish bags out there, the biggest complaint would be its monochromatic minimalism–but like all things, this is a matter of individual taste.
