The Rains Long Jacket is a stylish, minimalist raincoat that is designed with an urban-fashion-function nexus. While unisex, it is perhaps the most stylish rain jacket for women.
It is a longer version of the classic Rains jacket. A practical soft jacket that offers good protection with Scandinavian chic.
Like most rain jackets with polyester and polyurethane coating, it is heavy on weather-proofing and light on breathability.
Its stylishness doesn’t compromise on function with welded seams, usable pockets and useful flaps. The company aims to produce environmentally conscious items that withstand the test of time.
For all its urban utility, Rains’ stylish jacket is, however, not ideal for cycling.

A Fashion First Waterproof Jacket
The Rains Long Jacket is the longer version of the well-loved classic Rains waterproof jacket. It features a monochromatic design that makes it a great contender to wear in urban commutes, trips to the office and casual outdoor expeditions.
It offers great protection against the rain but keep in mind that the polyester and polyurethane coating does not offer high breathability. This means you might perspire more in a closed space like the metro, in a shop or on a bike.
While it’s the longer version of their popular rain jacket, it won’t cover the legs when cycling. You’ll need rain pants for this.
Great protection against the elements comes at a cost. It is not the ideal material to wear on a hike, even though it will keep you dry from the rain.
RELIABLE WEATHER-PROOFING
The lightweight waterproof Rains Long Jacket is made with the signature Rains monochromatic polyurethane fabric and its unique opaque matte finish and soft feel.
The seams are ultrasonically welded, which makes the product strong and enduring.
The flap pockets are double welded for durability, with a mesh net on the inside and a fishtail hem in the back. There are adjustable cuffs and press studs to fasten your jacket with and on the front pockets.
There are under-arm eyelets, which are small holes for ventilation. The back has two additional venting holes under the incorporated flap to keep you cooler. Still, it’s not a very breathable raincoat and, therefore, not ideal for hiking.
DETAILED DESIGN AND FUNCTIONALITY
The raincoat features a drawstring hood with a cap brim to better protect the face, but the hood flies off easily when biking or in the wind if it isn’t fastened with the string. The press studs are discrete, easy to use and practical.
The back has an incorporated additional flap with a fishtail hem detail that covers two extra ventilation holes. There are two ventilation holes underneath each armpit. The pockets are partly covered with a mesh net.
WATER RESISTANCE
It features W3 waterproof protection from light rain but we did try it out in heavier conditions and it offered great protection, with no penetration at all after an hour in a downpour. The water slides off due to its great hydrophobic coating. It is easy and quick to air dry or wipe dry later.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
This garment can be washed in a machine with similar colors, in cold water at 30°C / 86°F without fabric softeners. It should be air-dried and NOT tumble-dried, ironed, dry-cleaned or bleached.
PRICE/QUALITY RATIO
The Rains Long Jacket is in the higher price range of waterproof garments. It is an elegant raincoat that stands out for its look of sophistication. It also offers good protection and is a great choice for everyday use as it’s also fairly lightweight.
It is durable and sustainably sourced–and it’s vegan. The company aims to make products that last, reflected in the price.
It is not the ideal garment if you want it to double as a rain jacket for more intensive activities. Great for casual strolls, walking the dog and short, easy bike trips from A to Z. But its breathability is limited when it comes to higher-intensity movement like hiking and this means you might sweat when wearing it.
CHOOSING THE BEST RAIN JACKET
As always, we compared the Rains Long Jacket against a few other waterproof options.
We always try to emphasize when making a review, it is important to consider your specific needs, preferences and how you intend to use an item.
We compared it to the Marmot PreCip Jacket, which comes at a slightly lower price and appears to be a favorite among those with an active lifestyle that includes biking or backpacking and hiking. It is a versatile and affordable choice to consider.
The Frogg Toggs Rain Suit is another option if you want protection all over, including your legs. It is super lightweight, cheap and somewhat more breathable–but clumsy and not as durable.

DO WE RECOMMEND IT?
The Rains Long Jacket is a very stylish raincoat. It’s popular with women wanting protection and to stand out well. For this, we highly recommend it.
You’ll find it easy to grab and carry along in your bag. It is manufactured with longevity in mind and the Rains company values sustainability.
It is not the ideal for more technical and intensive sporting activities.
It will work fine for casual strolls and short bike trips. But its breathability is limited when it comes to higher-intensity movements like hiking or trekking and this means you might sweat when wearing it.
On the other hand, we liked that it is highly windproof and offers windchill protection. When the wind picks up, it does help maintain body temperature compared to other models we have tried. So it is good to consider the conditions you will be wearing it in and decide if breathability or windchill protection are more important to you.
Something worth mentioning is that since the pockets are partly covered with a mesh net, carrying keys in them could easily make a hole and that is a minus.
Overall, we have gotten much use out of it and come to the conclusion that it is a functional item to have. It does come with a few limitations and it is pricey. For a womens rain jacket that’ll stand out and keep the rain out too, this long raincoat from Rains is a good one.
