Frogg Toggs are Cheap But Reliable

Frogg Toggs is simple rainwear that offers a waterproof jacket and pants at an extremely low price. This Amazon bestseller caught our attention and, in truth, we thought we were going to eviscerate it in a review. More than a year later, our experience with this set tells another story.

First and foremost, this rain suit keeps you dry. We’ve tested this in all kinds of wet weather. We’ve had it on for all kinds of activities too. Biking through the city during storms and against a squadron of super-soaker water canons. It passed with flying colors.

That’s not to say that the Frogg Toggs rain pants and jacket are impervious to damage.

Even though the material has held up well, it feels papery. Where the fragility of the fabric will show is in the wilderness, treading through thornbush or rubbing up against sharp rocks.

The pants, in particular, can rip in the crotch if they are worn low around the waist. This happens when bending or crouching, creating too much pull around the seams. Avoid this, though, and all should be fine.

But don’t expect this suit to last until the end of days. But, its strength lies as a backup or precautionary suit that can be stuffed into a go bag or prep set.

Construction and Design

The first thing we noticed about Frogg Toggs Men’s All-Sport Rain Suit is its range of designs and colors available online. You can choose to stay with plain color combos or opt for the outdoorsy types, ideal if you’re out hunting. The rough appearance of the material–it takes on a crumpled appearance–somehow gives it a tough exterior look.

You can have your Frogg Toggs in Black Jacket/Black Pants, Hi-vis Lime Jacket/Black Pants, Mossy Oak Bottomland, Realtree Max-5, Realtree Timber, Royal Blue Jacket/Black Pants, and Realtree Xtra (just to name a few).

The baggy fit is ideal for layering, made better with the pants’ 4-way cut and the jacket’s parka-inspired cut. We got ours in regular sizes and still managed to feel comfy with a couple of layers on. So even though the waterproof jacket doesn’t have a gusset in the underarm area like Black Diamond StormLine, or at the crotch like HARD LAND Waterproof Pants, you still have free range of motion.

Some other reviewers have noted the inconsistent sizing of Frogg Toggs, so double-check with their chart. We recommend that you stick to your actual size for a comfortable fit. What we noticed with our pair was that it was true to size except for the length of the arms, which were too short and seemed to climb toward the elbows because of the elastic cuffs.

Construction-wise, Classic All-Sport is polypropylene-made (PP). This material is waterproof since it’s non-woven, and this Frogg Toggs didn’t fail us (more on that in a second). There are no porous membranes for water to penetrate through like in typical fabrics.

On the downside, it’s pretty thin, compromising its durability. And if you’ll be hunting with a bow, you better be stationary since PP will rustle and give away your presence.

Nylon-made/blended rainwear with DWR coatings like OUTON or MIER would be great alternatives.

This rain suit from Frogg Toggs is a decent pair of rainwear for its price point. And yes, it’s a 2-in1- deal! You get a waterproof jacket and waterproof pants in one purchase.

The seams don’t have reinforced stitching, but this Frogg Toggs is fully-taped. You’ll find tape backing in every seam in both rainwear. It amps up waterproofness, but it also acts as reinforcement.

Classic All-Sport Rain Suit is a pretty straightforward waterproof gear. Nothing fancy but super handy. And since it’s very lightweight, it’s also packable. Though it doesn’t stow away into its own pockets, rolling this Frogg Toggs compresses them into a compact size. You can carry them every day to work or your outdoor shenanigans without bulk eating your bag’s storage.

Waterproofness and Breathability

Frogg Toggs’ very own DriPore Gen 2 membrane is sandwiched between the PP inner and outer layer. With >15,000 mm waterproof and >10,000 g/m2/24 hr. Breathability rating, All-Sport Rain Suit found a sweet balance. You’ll stay dry under moderately-heavy rain and heavy snow with light to moderate pressure. You might experience clamminess if you’re doing an intense activity while wearing your Frogg Toggs, but you’ll like the insulation All-Sport serves for general use.

Its waterproofness and breathability are a reliable combo for general use.

Of course, it’s not a workhorse or warm like GORE-TEX is, but at the end of the day, this Frogg Toggs is budget-friendly. And for its price tag, you’re getting a good deal of waterproofness and breathability.

If you’re willing to spend more (at least twice), go for a waterproof jacket and waterproof pants packed with a GORE-TEX membrane. This membrane has at least a 28,000 mm waterproof rating, with breathability ranging from 17,000-25,000 g/m2/24 hr. It’s a premium membrane that comes at a premium price.

Durability

The paper-thin material seemed to survive well under regular use in the durability section, like your commute to work, grocery trips, or running mundane errands. The camouflage design for hunting and other outdoor activities was a helpful perk, but tearing might be a problem if sharp edges catch you.

And we know that once you’re on the field, the last thing you want is to worry about your rain gear. Kneeling might damage the material since All-Sport from Frogg Toggs doesn’t have articulated knees like Gash Hao Waterproof Pants and Marmot Men’s Minimalist.

All-Sport held up well for not-so-intense activities like hiking or regular urban use.

For real-rugged use in the wilderness that needs to withstand abrasive bushes and sharp rocks, it’s best to opt for pricier rainwear with the durability you can trust. Consider looking for waterproof gear from Patagonia, Columbia, or REI. But if you’re planning to use it once or twice, Frogg Toggs won’t be a bad option.

Features

Before diving further into this Frogg Toggs rainwear’s features, don’t forget how budget-friendly it is. And with that, some compromises have to be made. It’s got all the basics to make your time outdoors more enjoyable, even under downpours. Whether you’re biking, off-roading, fishing, biking, hunting, or doing regular errands, you’ll like these simple yet functional features.

Hood

This rain suit from Frogg Toggs comes with an adjustable and removable hood. Compared to pricier waterproof jackets with an attached hood like Columbia Watertight II and Outdoor Research Foray, that’s a plus. When hiking or camping under tolerable drizzles, you can simply unsnap the hood from the collar. It means you can also use your Frogg Toggs as a windbreaker!

However, we noticed that it’s a bit of a hassle to calibrate the hood’s size of this Frogg Toggs rain gear. Yes, there is a string to adjust the hood at two ends, but you’ll need to tie the ends as locks since they don’t have toggles. It’s irritating compared to waterproof jackets with drawstring toggles on the hood like Patagonia Torrentshell and The North Face Apex Flex GTX 3.0.

Remember, All-Sport from Frogg Toggs is not seemingly helmet-friendly, but we managed to have one on anyway. It can be done.

Elastic Cuffs

To help keep out rain and cold wind, you’ll notice that Classic All-Sport has elastic cuffs. These were pretty snug, but because the arms were too short it seemed to constantly ride up the forearms toward the elbows. This was more an irritant than a problem and we generally prefer elastic cuffs to velcro options.

We dealt with mobility restrictions when we tested Black Diamond StormLine and REI Co-op Drypoint GTX. But again, this depends on your preferences. You’ll also find waterproof jackets with a combination of elastic and Velcro cuffs like Outdoor Research Foray. With this Frogg Toggs rainwear, the simplicity made it efficient.

The elastic cuffs do an excellent job of keeping the weather from seeping in.

Jacket Hem

Another basic feature some waterproof jackets have is an adjustable hem cord. Contrary to the hood, you’ll find two drawstring toggles by the hem, making All-Sport from Frogg Toggs a breeze to adjust on the fly and keep moisture out of the bottoms.

The hem toggle is a handy adjustment feature.

This amps up the snug fit of the Classic All-Sport waterproof jacket, ensuring that no water or cold wind gets in through the hem. It’s a practical yet missing piece in Marmot Minimalist and Marmot PreCip.

Adjustable Waistband

All-Sport from Frogg Toggs has a simple elastic waistband that you can calibrate via the drawstring toggle. It keeps the waterproof pants lightweight and easy to use. It’s almost the same with 5Oaks and Trailside Supply Co. Men’s, but no need to tie the string since you can quickly cinch with the toggle.

You can tighten up the waistband accordingly in a single cinch.

Again, it’s not the most sophisticated, but it gets the job done in a time-saving manner. Other waterproof pants are belt-compatible, and if you’re into such, we recommend Arctix Men’s Snow Sports Cargo, Gash Hao Waterproof Pants, and TBMPOY Waterproof Hiking Pants.

Velcro Ankles

We don’t know why Frogg Toggs switched from elastic, like in its waterproof jacket cuffs, to Velcro. Probably to accommodate sneaking into your rain pants even with your shoes on before strapping the Velcro tabs. It was possible for us to slide these pants quickly on while still wearing the Lowa Renegade mid-range hiking boots (for reference).

Velcro ankles provide enough protection from the elements.

It is the typical approach you’ll find in affordable waterproof pants. It could’ve been better if there were side zips. They aid in making it way easier to put in/take off your rain gear, even with boots on. Bonus, they work great in providing sufficient airflow as quickly as possible once the rain finally stops. We enjoyed this perk while using Clothin Waterproof, Marmot Minimalist, and 5Oaks. But then again, remember how affordable the All-Sport Rain Suit from Frogg Toggs is. The relaxed fit is spacious enough for shoe allowance.

There’s no pocket for your small items. You’ll have to keep them in your jeans or shell pockets as we did–without difficulty Frogg Toggs has to give up some design ticks to stay lightweight, which is understandable (considering its price).

Frogg Toggs Men’s Classic All-Sport Rain Suit is affordable waterproof rainwear offering you a 2-in-1 purchase. It’s cheap and has some downfalls, but it does an amazing job for the price.

It comes in a wide variety of plain and camo options, with every necessary adjustment point to give you a calibrated fit. Stay dry under moderate downpours and enjoy life outdoors without breaking your bank.

This Frogg Toggs has a waterproof material, but the material itself is not that durable. Its construction is good enough to endure regular use within the urban setting. If you don’t plan to do anything demanding while in nature (i.e., just camping, hiking, stationary hunting hiding in a tree), you’ll enjoy how practical Classic All-Sports are. But if you’re out for high-intensity activities (like climbing or running through the woods chasing after animals), no. It’ll be wise to invest in high-end waterproof gear instead.

Super lightweight and packable, functional yet straightforward- that’s pretty much what the Frogg Toggs rain suit is all about. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s not the most robust, but you’re getting a reasonable bargain for its price.
