A Resilient Waterproof Backpack For Watersports

The laptop sleeve and internal pocket of the 15-liter Fogland.

Testing the 15-liter and 25-liter Fogland waterproof backpacks, we were surprised they have a better waterproof rating than Patagonia’s Guidewater and the YETI Panga!

Our first impressions of the Fogland, in terms of comfort and features, are good too. The matte textile is clearly durable and strong enough to withstand abuse, including wading through thorn bushes without getting punctured.

The streamlined design keeps the bag compact, with no hanging straps that’ll interfere with watersports or other activities. There are a few pockets, practical compartments for organizing and attachment points for carrying gear externally.

What Is The Fogland Waterproof Backpack?

The Fogland Waterproof Backpack is a fully submersible bag with an watertight IP68 rating. It comes in 15L, 20L or 25L capacity and features several pockets and compartments. It has attachment loops, compression straps with buckles and velcro straps for external storage.

Made to withstand challenging weather conditions and keep water out, its high-performance zippers seal completely. This makes it safe if submerged intentionally or accidentally into a body of water. Sand and dust will also stay out and it can float, making it an excellent choice for watersports.

Features of the Waterproof Backpack

It is buoyant with an advanced hydrowall 420D nylon TPU outdoor textile. It is 100% waterproof is as hydrophobic as it gets, is easy to wipe dry, is tear-proof and abrasion resistant.

It features adjustable shoulder straps for a comfortable fit and a chest strap with a whistle buckle. The back comes with additional padding. There is a carry handle on the top and a front zippered pocket that seals, for quick access to essentials.

We like that Breakwater Supply is one of the few brands that include a zipper lubricant stick with your purchase.

Waterproofing and floatability

Its IP68 waterproof rating ranks it among the most safely submersible bags. It keeps its content dry even if submerged underwater for over 30 minutes up to a specific pressure, which usually translates to a few meters. That is longer than what some other brands offer.

The Fogland backpack can float even when carrying over 40 lbs (18kg) of weight, as indicated by the manufacturer, but we did not test this for this review. For safety reasons and to prevent injury, it is indicated to be packed at 10% of your body weight.

Using the Watertight Backpack for Watersports

To use the Fogland Waterproof Backpack for watersport activities, simply pack your belongings in the backpack and ensure you secure the zipper to the end. You can then wear the backpack or attach it to your kayak, canoe or other watersport vessel as a deck bag using the external attachment points.

Value

This pack is priced high but compared to other brands with similar top-quality manufacturing its price is fair and it does come with one of the highest IP ratings.

If you are going for a budget backpack or dry bag, there are more affordable options like the FE Active Cloudbreak 30L or the Vitchelo Waterproof 30L and more expensive ones like the Yeti Panga 28L.

The Fogland offers several compartments, the laptop pocket is convenient and it is ergonomically designed for comfort, plus it is reliable. It comes with a one-year warranty that can be extended to 2 years if you register your product. We find it a good investment in its category.

How Does It Measure Against Other Waterproof Backpacks?

We compared the Fogland backpack to a few waterproof and durable options.

It measured well against the mighty Patagonia Guidewater 29L, which is more pricey. There are only a few differences between these two regarding design, material and manufacturing. With the Patagonia, you can hang a ‘gone fishing’ sign on your door.

What is different about the Patagonia and could justify its higher price are the compatible external storage kits that are sold separately and its compatibility with the Patagonia Convertible Vest, plus the scabbards inside the back paneling, intended to hold fishing nets or other gear that can be pulled out easily.

It is fully submersible, will float in the water and is also well designed for water sports and outdoor use. But the Fogland’s IP68 waterproof rating promises longer submersion safety than the IPX7 rating on Patagonia – or the pricey Yeti Panga, for that matter, both of which offer a maximum of 30 min safe submersion, something worth pointing out.

As noted earlier, the Fogland–weighing 1.7-, 1.9-, and 2.4-lbs for the 15-, 20- and 25-liter packs–is lighter than the Panga, though it’s slightly heavier than the 29-liter Guidewater (2.2-lbs).

We also find that the IDRYBAG Waterproof Backpack is a good and affordable hardwearing choice. It is not a submersible bag but has great waterproofing and will float for a bit if you accidentally fall off your board or drop it from a boat.

There are several options out there when it comes to waterproof backpacks and dry bags in different sizes. We have compiled and tested them, so you don’t have to waste time looking.

Do We Recommend It?

Absolutely!

Having a trustworthy backpack in case you end up in the water during sports or caught up in heavy rain while hiking is a must. This backpack delivers what it promises. Its contemporary design doesn’t get in the way when out and about on a paddleboard or kayak.

We would go for the larger version, but it depends on how you pack.

We think it is great for watersports but wouldn’t use it as an everyday backpack.

In our opinion, everyday zipping and unzipping could eventually interfere with the zipper sealing properties but although we have no proof of that, we would save it mostly for watersports and outdoor action. It does come with a zipper lubricant stick though, and other brands do not offer that, which requires a thumbs up!

And yes, we did force it underwater. Everything is dry so we find the investment worth it.
